Pittsburgh to Myrtle beach, which route to take?

Leaving on a friday around 4pm. Should I go the Washington/Richmond route or take 79/77 to North Carolina? Assuming I go the Washington DC way will traffic still be a problem by the time I get there?

If you want to go through Richmond, don't go to DC first - no reason. Get on I-81 south, (via I-68) Take I-66 to Rt. 17 to I-95. (I think I have all of it in there). You avoid DC completely that way, and the parts of the road that isn't interstate is mostly 4-lane.

Chris:

It is better to take I-77. My family and I went there in 1995. The traffic is less and driving in D.C. can be stressful.

We took the D.C route last summer going down and opted for the Rt 17 route on the return. Much better in my opinion. I hate going anywhere near D.C no matter what time.
You would hit the DC area around 7:30-8p.m., and 95 south is still usually pretty bad at that point, particularly on a Friday evening. Avoid at all costs.
