Pittsburgh hotel recommendations
 

We are a family of 5 going to a Steeler's game in December and are looking for an upscale hotel - needing 2 rooms. I'm leaning towards the Omni William Penn or the Renaiassance. I am able to get a better rate at the Omni, but am concerned about some of the reviews I have read. Has anyone had any recent experiences at either hotel? How close are they to Heinz Field and how easy is it to get to the Field?

The Omni William Penn is a really beautiful hotel, just renovated. It has an old-fashioned elegance to it, but I am not sure about the location for your needs.

The Renaissance has a similar feel to it, and it is probably in a better location for Heinz Field, just a walk over the bridge, or a quick cab ride. I believe there is also a Steeler game day shuttle. Check the Pittsburgh port authority at www.ridegold.com for schedules.

IMO, the Renaissance is much more convenient for dining options than the Omni would be for the family as well, much more within a close distance.

I have stayed at both hotels, and think they are both beautiful, but I think the Renaissance would be more convenient for your needs for the game.

My only question is.....are you Steeler fans or cheering for the opponent?

I just stayed at the Sheraton Station Square a couple of weeks ago, which was very nice. While I was there for a wedding not a Steelers game, it was a game weekend. The hotel employees really get into the spirit. You can take one of the Gateway Clipper boats across the river to Heinz Field. I don't remember the exact price but I remember thinking it wasn't too bad. While you're there you could take your kids up the Incline that's near the hotel. It's neat and there's lots of Pittsburgh memorabilia at the museum at the top. Great views, too. Next to the Sheraton is Station Square with tons of restaurants, etc.

I stayed in the Omni William Penn in early September, and the room was very nice, and convenient to a lot of downtown, but probably not very convenient to Heinz Field. Seems like it would be a pretty long walk, including over the river.
