Pittsburgh help

Never been to Pittsburgh & need a suggestion for hotel/restaurants for one night near the
Carnegie Museums.

Thanks!

Pete

Pittsburgh is a good city to use Priceline for. I got a 4star downtown for $60.00.

Which museum(s) are you visiting? If the Andy Warhol and Carnegie Science Center, there is a great and fairly new Springhill Suites in a perfect location on the North Shore.

What are you looking for in the way of food?

Thanks for the info. Not real familiar with the layout of the city, but am interested in the Science Museums on Forbes (????). I wanted something where I could walk to the museums as well as the Phipps. Price is not a big concern.

Well, there are some lower scale hotels in that area, about 1.5 miles+ from Phipps--not sure how far from the Carnegie Science Museum they are though. Not sure if it is even walkable to either, but may be? This area is in the University of Pittsburgh section (Oakland). Hotels in that area are the Wyndham, Holiday Inn, Quality Inn, Residence Inn. Can't vouch for any of these, you could possibly go to tripadvisor.com to get some reviews of these particular ones. And, if you go to Yahoo maps, for example, you can type in Phipps Conservatory to see its proximity to the hotels.

Hugglynn, Thanks again. I think I'll stay in the central area (downtown?) and take a cab.
Much more simple. Pete

The museum of Natural History (the big museum with the dinosaurs :)
and the Art Museum are in Oakland, in the 'university' area.
Phipps is not part of the Carnegie Museums.
This site will show you a decent map and sites in the general vicinity of the Phipps.

The Science Center is not on Forbes, it is on the North Side, now called North Shore by many. As is the Warhold.
The National Aviary is also located on the North Side of the city.

None of these museums/sites are downtown.

I think that is a wise move, most of the hotels downtown are reasonably priced and have decent rooms.

Pete,
ALSO Pittsburgh is not a taxi friendly city. You should have no trouble getting a cab from a major hotel, but you cannot flag one down on the street to get back. You must call and request a cab unless you are in one of the rare places where there is a cab stand.

Boy is that right! We took a cab from downtown somewhere, forgot now where, but when we were ready to come back we had the bartender call and we waited FOREVER! I mean we waited a long, long time. Never again.

Thanks everyone!

I don't know if you're still following this thread, but Classy Cab(s) takes bookings and does any trip that begins or ends in the city of Pittsburgh. You can google them.

We stayed at the Residence Inn in Oakland last year. Very comfortable, clean and nice. I highly recommend it. It's not the Ritz, but great for about $160 a night (or it was when we were there!)

Don't miss the gorgeous Phipps Conservatory, it's a wonderful place!

I recently ate at an Italian restaurant called Minutello's in the Oakland area. It is a locals place (apparently "regulars") & the food was fantastic.
