Pittsburgh Baby!
Myself and 2 friends are off to Pittsburgh for the long weekend. We need a good hotel, near bars, restaurants, shops, etc. I heard the Strip District is fun (sounds like it at least)! Any suggestions? We have heard the Doubletree, Sheraton and the Hilton. Please help--we need to book ASAP. If you have any good restaurants, bars, etc that we should visit--please let me know.

Here's a tip for you: Go to www.visitpittsburgh.com - It is really a well-done site and is loaded with info as well as some special deals.I booked through them a couple of years ago, and when I had a very small problem with the hotel and let them know about it, they comped us another night at any hotel we chose. They were really great to work with. Also, we had a very nice meal at a restaurant called Bruschetta on the southside. I think young people would want to be based in this neighborhood since it seemed to have the most going on. Have fun.

do a search here for PGH...the Sheraton at Station Square might be good for you...there is things to do there..there no hotels in the strip..the South Side jumps..there is a B&B there..Morning-glory Inn..downtown rolls the sidewalks up after closing time(work and stores)..ck out pittsburgh.com for all kinds of info..you can cab most places..strip has all kinds of bars, rest, etc and so does South Side and Station SQ..so it depends on the scene and age...ck out old posts and you`ll get tons of info..

Strip District is great. We stayed down town, no one was there Saturday morning. We wandered over to the Strip District and found everyone. Very cool place, lots to check out. We ate lunch at Primanti Brothers, killer sandwiches. We also walked up to the former catholic church that is now a micro prew pub. About a 15-20 minute walk from the strip. Up on a hill across the street from a larger brewery. The beer was good, worth a visit just to see how the converted the place. Have a great time~

FYI, The Doubletree is now the Westin (and the Westin is now the Omni).

Here's a summary:
The Sheraton is at Station Square on the Monongahela River. It overlooks the general "Point" where the Allegheny and Monongahela converge to make the Ohio. There are tons of restaurants, bars, etc. there, plus you can get a great view of the city, do a tour on a paddleboat, walk across the bridge to downtown, etc. You can also walk over to the NOrth shore (the Ohio side)where the ballpark is (it's still neat to see even without baseball) and visit the Andy Warhol Museum. There's a great Science Museum over there with SportsWorks--a fabulous demo on the science behind athletics. Above all, you can get to two inclines, funiculars that climb up the big hill, Mount Washington, for a spectacular view of the city. For someone new to the city, this is the easiest place to stay. You can't get lost,it's quite safe, you get to at least view the city around sixty zillion ways, and you can get a cab at any hour anywhere.

But it's just a tad sanitized.

The South Side (again, on the Monongahela) is old neighborhood turning chic with all the lovely bumps and oddities of that transition. Some fabulous restaurants mixed in with happening bars and antique shops and coffee shops, etc. I don't know of any accomodations there, but perhaps that B&B that other poster mentioned would be good.

The Strip District has no hotels within it although the Westin (old Doubletree) is close. By day it's a wholesale market area--fascinating--and by night it's an on-the-edge nightclub area. It does have some culture. The John Heinz Regional history museum lies in the middle and the headquarters for the nationally ranked Pittsburgh Ballet is there, too. But there's a biker bar, a strip joint, etc. there. The microbrews in the area are at Valhalla, The Foundry, and further up (not that walkable, no matter what the poster says)The Churchbrew.

Hope this gives you a start.

Shadyside is a pretty cool area. Lots of neat old houses with some shopping and restaurants.
