Pittsburgh - antique stores
 

Hi,
My DH is off to Pittsburgh next month (work training trip), but he will have 1 free day. He was hoping to visit the Carnegie Museums, but they will be closed on his free day.
He asked me to inquire about antique stores. So does anyone know of some antique stores downtown - he will be staying at the Omni William Penn Hotel (and he won't have a car).
Anything other suggestions for something to do on his free day would be appreciated.

I think there are some antique shops on the South Side (the big hill overlooking the city). He could visit Station Square, take the incline up to the top of the hill, enjoy the view, and then schmooze the trendy neighborhood shoppes.

Or, he could head for the Strip District, where the wholesale stores with stuff from all over (cheeses, paper goods emporiums, fishmongers, and such) are located. This area has developed into a tourist destination in recent years -- he could schmooze the import and get great food.

Other ideas: The Andy Warhol Museum, a Pirates game, or a Penguins game (depending on dates, of course).

I agree with the South Side. There are a number of antique shops along East Carson Streets along with a lot of other cool shops, restaurants, bars etc. It is an easy cab or bus ride from the William Penn. The Strip district is a lot of fun unless it is a Sunday.

Now that I think about this there is a large Antique Mall in Castle Shannon which is a suberb south of Pittsburgh. It is right at the "T" stop called either 6th street stop or Killarny. The T is the light rail transit in Pgh and there is a stop across from the William Penn also so it would be pretty easy and only about a 20 minute ride. It would also be a quick cab ride but the T is pretty simple and runs often. He just has to make sure to get on the right one which I think is the Library/Castle Shannon track. The hotel should be able to assist. Hope this information isn't too late.

There's a large antique store that I really like in the Strip. It is between Penn and Liberty around 20th or so. Maybe 21st. Anyone there will know.

He can start with coffee at La Prima and a freshly baked sfogliatelle. Antique shop, wander about a bit to all the food shops, then get a quick taxi to the South Side. There are a couple of interesting antique shops as others have mentioned.
