Pit Stops Thru New York State, NH,Mass and Conn.

Late August, my wife and I plan to visit a friend on Long Island, NY. We plan on taking a slow trip -starting at Kingston on Canada side down Route 81 along 3 to Tupper Lake,NY over to NH route 89 down follow 91 to BridgePort,Conn. and finally Ferry over to Long Island. Can you suggest any Pit Stops ( dining spots, points of interest, nice towns, hotels/motels for overnite stay ) along the way . Looking for any suggests which will make the trip more enjoyable. Thanks

I recently stayed at the Comfort Inn, E Windsor CT right near the highway. There was a popular Italian restaurant right across the street. The Comfort Inn provides a nice continental breakfast.
Brattleboro VT looks like an interesting town. Keene NH is on the other side of the river and would require a short detour. It's a college town with lots of restaurants. On the NH side of the river up the steep hill from Brattleboro is a gas station/convenience store where we always gas up and gets snacks before getting on Rt 91. If you're in Burlington or Montpelier VT at lunch time stop at one of the restaurants operated by the Culinary Institute. The Quechee/Woodstock VT area also offers interesting restaurants. Simon Pierce is worth the drive, housed in an old mill building with water generated electricity. You can watch potters and glassblowers at work. Woodstock is one of the prettiest towns in VT. You won't be going into NH. The part of Rt 89 you will be on is in VT.

Dfrost has some great ideas!

If you'd like to do some shopping along the way, Yankee Candle has their flagship store in So Deerfield, MA just off Rt. 91. Tons of candles, home decor, and Christmas items (displays like Katie Wolfart in Rothenberg, Germany). Also, a decent sit-down restaurant, and a take-out with lovely pastries. Nice gardens, too.

Best wishes for a wonderful road trip!

To get to Bridgeport, CT, which is where the Port Jefferson Ferry is located you must take I91 to I95. The ferry dock is about five minutes from the thruway.

Do you have the schedule for the Port Jefferson ferry?

Dfrostnh - thanks for your input. Your right it's VT we pass thru not NH. We will check out Woodstock and stop at one of Culinary Institute Resturant (Great idea)

Dreamer2 and i am kane - thanks also
I did check the ferry schedule for Port Jefferson ( seems to run on the hour)

Thanks all - great feedback, just what we hoped for.

The Chesterfield Inn in Chesterfield, NH is a great place to stay for checking out both Brattleboro and Keene. If you take exit 3 off of Interstate 91 in Brattleboro, the Chesterfield Inn is just over the river into NH. Keene is only about 20 minutes from there. It has been quite a few years since we have been there, but my brother and his wife go every year. Their website is www.chesterfieldinn.com
