Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg Cabin Roads
Wife and I have been looking at many different cabins for our trip in Aug.to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. The cabins in mountains look great. I do not like heights. How steep are these roads? We have been told by a friend its like a roller coaster. Any info would be great. Johnw996.

Ok. We are driving a Ford Windstar and it is pretty long. We just dont want to spend all that money and find out just because the edge of your wheels are hanging off the mountain we are not able to make it to the cabin. Thanks. Johnw996

We've stayed in some really nice cabins and not had bad roads at all. My husband and I liked the Mountain Primrose best.

That's Wildflower Rentals...they were an excellent company. We had a water issue and they came right away and fixed it. Also, we told them exactly what we wanted (seclusion) and we got great personal service. Another good company is Jackson Mountain rentals. We did a group cabin through them and they were excellent. Book early, if possible.

The roads to rental cabins aren't bad, and the road to Cherokee won't be bad either, for your Windstar. It's all paved highway. Just avoid the gravel roads in the GSMNP and you'll be fine. You certainly won't be the only tourists in a minivan.

Hmm. I don't remember 441 over the top of the Smokies being bad for heights etc ... it's a paved two-lane highway with a line down the middle, not too narrow, scenic pulloffs and guardrails/rock walls on the edges where necessary. But then I was raised in the mountains and learned to handle stuff like that on my first day of driver's ed, so my perspective may be a little off.
The road to Cataloochie Valley gives me the heebie jeebies though -- one lane gravel with steep drop-offs ... and two-way traffic. Proceed with caution. The payoff is a beautiful unspoiled spot in the GSMNP with few visitors. And lots of elk.

Oh agreed! The road should be avoided in bad weather (and is often closed in winter months unless you have chains). I've hit a fog bank / heavy clouds up there before and it's no fun not being able to see more than two feet in front of your car!
