Photographs taken along the High Road to Taos
 

This is a set of photographs that I previously posted on Flickr that were taken in the summer of 2010, showing the High Road to Taos. We did the drive as a day trip from Santa Fe.

These are beautiful. We are going to be in Santa Fe next Saturday and plan to drive the low road to Taos, out to the Rio Grande Gorge bridge, then back down to Santa Fe on the High Road with stops along the way. This is our third time and our friends first time. Do you remember how you got to Nambe Falls and how out of the way it is from the main route? Also, how much extra time do you think we should allow for the Gorge bridge?

Great pics. We too drove the high road from Sante Fe to Taos - and stopped at Chiyamo(sp) - to pick up some sacred dirt for my mom, which she loved.

Just historic/classic all through there - and then if you have a chance - drive up above Taos - through the beautiful Angel Fire, "Enchanted Circle" - loop. http://www.nmts.org/rides/taosHighCountryLoop.htm

Great pictures! I did the high road from Taos to Santa Fe on a spectacularly clear day last fall. Just beautiful.

Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos. We really enjoy that drive as well, especially in the fall when the aspens and cottonwoods are golden yellow. We're heading out next weekend and I hope to get up around Chimayo to Rancho de Chimayo for lunch. We haven't eaten there since the fire.

@jet519: The Gorge Bridge is about 10=15 minutes outside of Taos. The amount of time spent I think depends on how many photos someone may want to take. Ten to 15 minutes tops plus the drive time so I would say 45 minutes from Taos/viewing/back to Taos. You could stop at Orlando's on the way into town for lunch. Or, stop at Rancho de Chimayo in Chimayo for an authentic New Mexican meal and beautiful surroundings.

Another favorite drive is north from Santa Fe to Abiquiu on 84, and then east on 64 from Tierra Amarilla over to Tres Piedres. Gorgeous scenery especially at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu.

jet519: I'm on the road traveling right now, so I can't check exactly how we got to Nambe Falls, but I do recall it wasn't particularly difficult. We just took the interstate north out of Santa Fe, got off at the exit closest to the Nambe reservation, and I think we were able to basically follow the signs from there across the reservation. There was a paved road all the way to the parking area. From the parking area, you do need to take a sometimes steep trail up 10-15 minutes through the woods to get to the overlook for the falls.

The only issue about visiting the Rio Grande gorge bridge is the time involved in walking back out to the middle of it to take your photos. There is a parking area on the west side, as I recall. The earthships of which I included a photo are another mile or so farther west.

jet519, to get to Nambe Falls you take Hwy. 285 out of Santa Fe, not the interstate. I haven't been there yet, but we have driven past it.
