Photo Hunt or other Games for travel...

I would like to know what kind of games or activities you and your family play while traveling.

One idea I got from another thread is to give my kids a disposable camera with a list of sites/monuments and a brief description and history. The kids will search for the sites and take pictures of them. To sweeten the pot I am thinking of giving them a dollar for every site/photo they match. I think this is great b/c they will constantly be reading about these places as to not miss one that we pass.

Any ideas of other games or how I can tweak or enhance the one mentioned? Also, I don't think this game will work with the 5 yr old. Any ideas for younger kids that would be fun and educational at the same time?

The one we always did in the car was the license plates. See how many different states you can identify.

We always play the alphabet game. Start with A and when you see a word that starts with it, shout it out then move on to B! My kids love it and we always try to see who can do the whole alphabet the fastest!

We always play "Who am I?" You choose a person and tell the others if it's a man or a woman/dead or alive. The others can only ask yes or no questions as they try to guess your person. If you answer no to their questions 10 times, you win.

We also used to pass around a game called "Numbers Down" I have seen it called other names. It is a wooden box with numbers on little flippers at the top of the box. You roll 2 die and flip the two numbers down--you can also add the 2 numbers together and only fip one number down--when you roll 2 die that don't match any of your available numbers, you are done--you are a winner of you get all the numbers down. Easy game to transport--no parts to lose--other than the die.

Thank you for the ideas. The momsmivivan site is perfect.

Like the idea of Bingo sheets in the car and crossing items off that you see.

A variation on the alphabet game, if you're driving through the western states where traffic and billboards are scarce, is to come up with words for things you can see around you. Road/freeway/highway/asphalt etc. - you get the idea.
