Phoenix with a little elevation?
Do you know of a way to get a little cooler (outdoor) air in the Phoenix metro area? We'll be staying off I-17 and Peoria Avenue next weekend. A restaurant or a park on a mountain not too terribly far of a drive?

It's a girlfriend meet-up and it was spur of the moment. I know it's going to be hot but we're just going to hang out, maybe shop a little in air-conditioned stores, eat and drink wine. Not a lot of physical activity planned other than digesting and metabolizing. I was thinking 20-30 minutes to find a higher elevation destination.

I think your best bet is to stay indoors (or in the pool). You won’t be anywhere out if the Phoenix metro in 20-30 minutes. |
Asking for less heat 20 or 30 mins from Phoenix is like asking for less traffic 20 mins from LA or fewer people 20 mins from Times Square :) |

My only thought has been to move your weekend to maybe Sedona & gain 3000', abt 100 miles. But probably not worth it for just a weekend. If you want to eat outside look for a place with those mist-spraying set-ups.

For Phoenix, stay indoors. Drink a LOT of water. Gatorade. Go outdoors very early or after dark. For cooler weather go to Sedona. Emergencies caused by heat tend to happen to visitors from other states and countries. Be safe! Are you driving or flying to Phoenix? The extreme heat may affect the flights into PHX. Seriously, it gets too hot for planes to land; their hydraulic systems can’t handle it. . Airport will be closed if it gets too hot. I have had it happen to me.June is absolutely the WORST month of the year in Arizona. High heat, low humidity , like a blast from a pizza oven. Rains come in the summer monsoons and temperatures go down, much nicer. |

Are your accommodations cancelable? If so, I'd try to book something in Sedona - though at this late date that will be difficult. Next weekend Sedona is forecast to be in the high 80's/low90's. If you can't change anything you just need to pray for only hot, not HOT
I guess you all had a good reason for picking Phoenix. (Just checked and for what its worth, next weekend Phoenix is supposed to be only in the low 100'sF - be glad you aren't there in the middle of this week) |
Had a great time in Phoenix with my girlfriend of almost 50 years and as Janisj mentioned, temperature was only in the low 100's. Lot's of air conditioning happened and some high quality pool time, too. We swam and then sat in the shade pool side for hours and read, talked and even drank wine once or twice. This was a very low budget trip. Shopping at Goodwill and Savers and a very good trip to Ikea. Do you know they sell terra cotta pots? Great prices, I hope they hold up over the winter. Some eating out and a little hotel room picnicking.
A little disclosure, I, pdx, have moved to Tucson. Awkward when posting. Didn't think about this eventuality when I was searching for a screen name 15 years ago : ) Thanks to all of you for taking the time to respond. |
