Phoenix Visit late April, What is open?

My husband and I will only have one day, while my daughter is working, to see Phoenix. It will be a Wednesday and we will have a car. I really would like to see the State Capital and the museum inside, but I’m assuming it is still closed due to Covid? Is the Japanese Garden recommended?
The next day we are all headed to Flagstaff and this I will probably post a separate thread for that.
We recognize it will be hot, but we’re are coming from South Florida and know how to cope. We are seniors, love history and culture.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Fodors! Late April may or may not be hot in Phoenix. My suggestion is to head east on 88 out of Apache Junction and spend some time at Theodore Roosevelt Lake. From there head south on 188 to Globe. Research Globe AZ. Take US 60 back into the city. Along the way you might want to check out the Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park just off US 60 near Superior.
I expect the state capitol will be closed to visitors until at least mid-summer. On the way to Flagstaff, check out Camp Verde.

Thank you, I will definitely study a map and look into what you have suggested!

I am not sure about the museum you mentioned but I would recommend the Heard Museum which has one of the largest Native American collections.
