Phoenix to Las Vegas car rental

I know there have been several posts about this in the past which I have read, but still cannot seem to find a strategy to find a reasonable one-way rental from Phoenix to LAS from Oct 1st through Oct 6th. One website had a rental through FOX for around $450 for a mid-size but all the others are over $700 & even $450 seems pretty high. Tried a one way rental through Hertz from a non-airport location per some suggestions, but that is no different.
Has anyone done this recently & if so, can I get some tips for which rental agency/location to try? Does anyone know of any local companies in Phoenix that may be cheaper? We plan to drive to Sedona, then the Grand Canyon & continue to Las Vegas. Would really like to visit Antelope Canyon as well but not sure we will have the time. I would really appreciate any suggestions since we may have to fly out from Phoenix if I cannot find a cheaper option though I really want to end the trip in Vegas, need to buy those tickets soon!
Thanks in advance.

One way car rentals are usually expensive. But if your plans are flexible, you might try flying into LAS and out of PHX. I did a quick check, and it looks like you could get a car for under $200.

Thanks, unfortunately I already have the one-way tickets to Phoenx since yesterday was the last day to buy them, just need to buy the return. I guess you did not have any better luck with the one-way from Phoenix?

Phoenix Motor in Phoenix and Motor Mile in Scottsdale with Hertz are both quoting $350/week total for midsize 10/1-6 to Las Vegas. They are both about a $25 cab ride from the airport, I think.

Use one of the $25 or $35/week off codes. That's probably as low as you'll get. If you have AAA you could reduce it by 10%.

Thanks weimarer, I tried a few locations & got a rate of $340 for pickup at the Toyota at 7701 East Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd
Scottsdale. That was the cheapest I could find though the hotel in Scottsdale (Residence Inn)told me the taxi would cost about $40-45. The other hotel we were considering was one in Tempe but I am not sure which Hertz location would work well for that.

www.hertz.com
Choose the hertz location at Phoenix Motors, Indian School Road
Don't forget to choose LAS as your return spot.
Discount code: 62455 (United airlines, you can sign up for their frequent flier online, or use your own airline's code here).
Rate code: Drive

You're all set! A short cab ride but worth it. Just make sure your flight arrives PHX in the daytime when the off-airport Hertz is still open.

joesorce, Thank you so, so much! Just did what you instructed & got the rate of $270 for a full size car - much less than anything I had managed to get! That is a real relief, now I can go ahead & book the return from Vegas. Our flight does arrive after the location closes so will take a cab from the airport to the hotel & will have to figure out how to get there the next morning. Does anyone know which hotels are near this location?

Thanks again, joesorce, I really appreciate it, I knew Fodorites would come through, as always!

Just an update for anyone looking to do this in the future. I called Hertz & on my second attempt, I got a rep who gave me a one day rental from the airport to the Indian School location for $58 where I can drop off the car from the airport & pick up the other one that we will be renting to LAS. She also applied another $25 off coupon that SHE had to my earlier reservation to bring it to $254. Now I do not have to worry about transportation from the airport or from the hotel to Hertz the next morning so I am thrilled! I had called Hertz earlier as well & was told the one day rental would be $111 so I am not sure how this rep quoted $58 but she seemed to really want to help. Guess who you talk to makes all the difference! Thanks again to all who replied.

Actually I think those local hertz offices will usually pick you up at your hotel if you arrange it in advance. So the new trick would be to find a hotel with shuttle from the airport, yet close enough to the Hertz office for pickup in the morning. But sounds like your solution will work too and you can stay anywhere that you want to. Have a good trip.
