Phoenix - Spring Break

My son, 16 loves baseball. We plan to go to Phoenix, AZ in late March 2008 to watch a few teams during Spring Training. We both play tennis and love biking. What else is there to do in Phoenix for a teenager? What hotel/resort do you recommend? We plan to stay at least 5 days. Thanks!

You can hike- lots of good hiking. Hike Camelback mountain in Scottsdale if you stay near there. South Mountain park in Chandler area also has great hiking, and there may be biking trails there too, check on that.

Where are you staying, bc that will impact biking (you need to rent a bike, right?)

Does he like Nascar or might want to see a race? There is a great track near the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass resort, also in the Chandler area. That resort is really nice, close to hiking at South Mountain, has an equestrain center for riding in a great environment, wonderful food, etc.

I can tell you from my experience, finding a place to stay during that time, if you haven't already, might be tough. I used to travel there on business and during spring training there are many high school and college baseball teams there competing in tournaments so places fill up fast in the area.

emd has some great suggestions for hiking.

Enjoy....spring training games are so much fun.

We've been to Scottsdale for spring training a number of times. Keep in mind that on game days, you won't have time for much else, unless you're very early risers and do something in the morning. For us, it was always get up reasonably late, make our way to the game, have lunch nearby, game, back to hotel, pool, dinner.

IF you are truly interested in hiking and biking and will have time, I will dig up an old thread that I started asking for hiking/biking options around Phoenix when I was spending time there for work a few yrs ago.

There is tons of hiking in and around Phoenix. Pistewa Peak is a good hike!

I would also make a stop at the Heard Museum. It was fascinating!

Maryland - I took my two boys there years ago to spring training and had SO much fun. I do not have any great advice just had to comment and hope you enjoy yourselves as much as we did. It was like being at a little league game. Big fun! Root for the Angels!

South Mountain is in Phoenix, not Chandler. It is the world's largest city park.

Mountain biking is good at McDowell Mtn Park and the Phoenix Mtn Preserve. Road cycling (on separate cycling paths) is good in the Indian Bend Greenbelt and on a path on the north side of the Arizona Canal from the Biltmore to Glendale.

Usery Pass Park has trails. The Peralta Trail in the Superstition Mountains is very scenic.

If you want to go to any of the Cubs games, you need to get tickets as soon as possible

I said South Mountain was in the Chandler area- I was staying in Chandler and it was a short drive from there, on that side of Phoenix...that's what I meant.

Thanks all for the great advice. Sounds I need to book a place right away. I am looking forward to this trip, I have never been to AZ.
