Phoenix/Scottsdale area
I am going to a conference in Phoenix at the end of January. I will be staying at the Pointe South Mountain resort. I will probably have one full day of free time. Any suggestions on things to do or see? Also, I need suggestions on restaurants for dinner. Any input is appreciated.

Pointe South Moutain is my favorite place to stay when I go to Phoenix. It has recently undergone a huge renovation - rooms are very nice. Arizona Mills outlet mall is 5 minutes away. There is a good restaurant called the Claim Jumper nearby. For a day trip, Sedona is not too far away and very pretty. There is also a new mall that has opened in Chandler (about 15 minutes from hotel) that is very nice. Of course, if you like to golf there's plenty of great courses.

If you're from the west coast, Claimjumper won't be much of a treat. While a good chain restaurant, it's still a chain. I'd suggest that you run a search for previous posts on southwest cuisine in that area.

With an entire free day, I'd think about going to see Frank LLoyd Wright's place if you enjoy architecture.

I am still looking for a one-nights stay in the Phoenex area before my one-week Scottsdale timeshare trade kicks in during February.

After reading the above posts, I was naturally curious of the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort. I looked it up on the web:
<http://www.pointehilton.com/squa/default.stm>
The place looks fairly nice for my one-night, yet it looks as if it might be geared more toward families.

Do you think my traveling companion and I might be interested in staying there for the evening? The pool sure looks nice and I'll bet it is heated. You may remember my earlier posts about a pool being an important first-day adventure for any trip after a long drive or flight. I guess I just don't want to be around a ton of families if this is what it caters to (I work around kids all year... need a little break *smile*)

Any information you might share would be appreciated.

Happy Trails,
Paul
