Phoenix Restaurants

Need advice on restaurants. Interested in Southwest and Mexican(not TexMex) cuisine.
Thanks

Sancho Sep 24th, 2001 10:08 AM

I will boldly state my opinion: I think Phoenix is tragically lacking in good southwestern food for being the largest city in the southwest (not counting LA/SD here).
Locals will suggest the TeePee or Los Dos Molinos, etc.
But a metro area of 3 million people so close to Mexico should have better SW food than is available.
Macayo, Garcia's, Chevy's are all generic mass-Mex food same as in Wisconsin or Vermont.

For New Mexican try Richardsons-great food and margaritas. For Southwest I would suggest Ze Tejas or Sams Southwest Grill. I just went to Los Dos Molinos this weekend-they are known for their food being very hot. It was also much more noisy in the restaurant than I remember. It was hard to talk. And yes, we like TeePee on Indian School Road.

I would ditto all of Deb's choices, they are the ones I would have chose, along with Coyote Grill on Bell Road at Scottsdale Road.

If you can find your way to Scottsdale there's the Margarita Factory in North Scottsdale Road plus a few other Mexican eateries.
Go at the weekend, we were there and they had a Mexican band which made for a great atmosphere.

Los Olivos in old town Scottsdale. Run by the Corral family for over 50 years

If you want fabulous food try La Hacienda at the Scottsdale Princess. Pricey but great and the grounds are beautiful to walk around or to sit and have a drink. Always go at least once while we are out there. You will not be sorry!

With the exception of Los Olivos, I hate almost every place evryone else suggested. Try Pedro's on 55th Ave and Glendale. Atmosphere is not great but the food and the prices are incredible. Try the green corn tamales! Ever since I moved from Phx whenever my friends visit I make them bring me a half dozen. Even if you don't like tamales try one. These are different!

I'd recommend San Carlos Bay... The atmosphere is very casual, but the food is excellent! Here's their web site: http://www.arizona-restaurants.com/sancarlosbay/

ne of my favorite restaurants is Roxsand, located in The Biltomore Fashion Plaza. It has a trendy, upscale appearance, like a restaurant is SoHo, and the food is excellent.
