Phoenix or Scottsdale?
 

Hi all,
We are going to be in Phoenix in September for a concert at the Comerica Theater. While searching for hotels, I started looking at Scottsdale as well. It seems close enough for an Uber ride, and The Old Town area sounds nice for walking around. We arrive on Friday afternoon and leave Monday morning. Do you all have any advice for me , pros and cons and specific hotels for Phoenix or Scottsdale? The Hermosa Inn looks nice, as well as the Saguaro Scottsdale.
We would like more of a resort feel, with nice amenities, on the quieter side, with a nice pool. A fireplace in the room would be nice. (Hermosa Inn has some rooms like this). I know reviews and travel photos can vary wildly, so I was hoping someone here would have direct knowledge. Also, would we necessarily need to rent a car?

The Phoenix/Scotsdale area is so vast that a rental car is a must if you don't want to be pinned down at the resort...

You want a fireplace in Phoenix in September!!! Do you know how hot it is? It's usually in mid 90s to 100 in the afternoon.

Isn’t that what AC is for, so you can use the fireplace?

Yep - crank up the ac so you can use the fireplace. ;) I was in Phoenix early last week and trust me, the last thing I wanted was a fireplace (and that was at the end of October, not the HEAT of September.)

You should rent a car unless your hotel is very near the light rail. Uber is good too but will severely limit your explorations.
You have got to be kidding wanting a fireplace in over 100 degree heat! Scottsdale is a more upscale small city while Phoenix is a large city with good areas as well as bad. Old Town Scottsdale
might be interesting to you.

I'd pick Scottsdale.
I was there this summer and used Uber a lot. Depending on hotel parking charges, you may come up better using Uber even if you go long distances.

Definitely rent a car. The Phx metro area is huge and you would have more flexibility with a car.. Take light rail at your risk; hotbed for transients and drug users these days with limited access options. Scottsdale is just a suburb of Phx and old town is nothing special. Two spectacular resorts with character, history and great restaurants are Hermosa and Royal Palms, neither of which is in Scottsdale but close enough to easily drive or uber to Old Town if you chose to visit Old Town.

In September in Phoenix, you''ll only care about 2 things: A/C and a pool. This is still the summer season and most of the resorts offer discounts that the locals take advantage of. From what you're describing, I'd look at Gainey Ranch.

Thank you for the replies. I was thinking cool at night, but I guess I was wrong! The reason I was leaning more towards the Saguaro was it’s proximity to Old Town. My feeling was that even though there was a restaurant on site, we would like to walk around at night after a day at the pool, and find other restaurants and shops. The Hermosa looks good, but with not a lot around it.
