Phoenix Car Rental
 

I need to rent a car at PHX and will be driving a lot of miles over four days. Advantage and Payless Car Rental are both substantially cheaper than any of the other rental agencies, and more so when the outrageous PHX taxes are included.

I don't mind a car with higher mileage if the car has been reasonably maintained. Any input on either of these rental agencies would be appreciated

When will you be here? I ask because if it were me I would just do a bid through Priceline - especially if you are coming now which is low season because of the weather. I've bid on Priceline and ended up with a car from Hertz at a much lower rate than the regular rate at other locations I've travelled to and so if renting from an agency you're more familiar with is the issue that's what I would try. While I've never rented from Payless or Advantage, I know they have locations all across the U.S.

Not sure if it's still worth checking out but a couple of years back people were recommending the Hertz Local office on Indian Springs road as a good alternative to those airport rates. I think it was a $15 cab ride from the airport but worth it. However, your arrival and departure must be before 6pm when the local office closes.
If I recall, you could return the car to the airport Hertz at little extra charge.

I rented one time in Phoenix through Priceline and got the car for $13 a day, it made up for the crazy taxes. I was awarded a rental through Hertz for that trip. I think I ended up paying as much in taxes as i did for the rental.

If not, the hertz local edition as recommended by clarkgriswold.
