Phoenix & Tucson Hotels

Flying in to Tucson at the beginning of October (from London) and would like a good quality hotel within easy reach of the airport. We will be picking up our hire car and, after a 10 hour flight, won't want to drive for more than 30-60 minutes. We are off to the GC the following day so a hotel that does not involve retracing steps would be good. We will also be in Tucson a week after and, having seen good deals for the Westward Look, are tempted to stay there. We normally stay in 4 or 5 star hotels.

Westward Look may suit you fine. Depends on your taste. It has more of a 1970's flair to it than I like, but that's just me. Rooms are large, the place is clean and well run. Location is good. There are some very nice resorts in Tucson which are truly in the 4+ star range. But Westward Look isn't quite in that group. Fortunately all the good places to stay are on the way from the airport to Phoenix, so no backtracking.

We just stayed at the Westward Look during the week of Easter. We, too, were attracted by the price which was a good value. Our room was quite large with a minibar and a separate refrigerator. We had a balcony which overlooked a jacuzzi in a garden setting. While not run down, the resort has definitely seen better days. The furniture is quite dated and, despite a recent renovation, the rooms were not spotless. The bathroom area is quite nice with a large double sink arrangement( we were in a suite). The staff was very helpful and the gardens and landscaping were very nice. I was turned off by the long distances between buildings. We really had a hike to breakfast and the pool areas. Both pools have rather sparse sitting arrangements and they were small. We favor 4-5 star hotels and probably would not return to this resort.

I don't know what rates they are currently offering, but I have recommended the Windmill Inn in Tucson here before, and am doing so again! It's clean, modern, and in a good area for restaurants, etc. Btw, nothing in Tucson will be more than 60 min from the airport. Have a great trip!

By far the classiest hotel in Tucson is the Arizona Inn. It is a true historic Southwestern hotel with superb service and dining. It would be a great gateway to an Arizona vacation. The Windmill is a nice all suites inn at the base of the foothills- you also you might do a search for Loews Ventana and the Westin La Paloma-definetly all in your star range. Let us know which one you chose!

Check www.biddingfortravel.com and then bid on Priceline. You will get a great hotel cheap.

I wondered when you said you were driving from Tucson to the GC -- that's a long drive! Phoenix makes more sense (but it's still a pretty long drive.)

Consider staying in any one of several hotels in Scottsdale. The Camelback is nice but has a range of accommodations -- from two-story suites to basic rooms. Be sure you know what you're getting and whether it meets your needs.

The drive from the Phoenix Airport to Scottsdale is about 40 mins. in non-rush hour, not bad at all. Then, most of Scottsdale is about 20 mins. from the highway that heads north to the GC. Good luck!

I would pick Camelback or Marriott Mountain Shadows in Scottsdale. Both offer airport pickup ( they are located about 8 miles from the airport). Both have Hertz renatl desks on site so you can get your car the next day.
