Philly
We will be traveling to Philadelphia. Where is the best Cheese Steak sandwich?
|
Pat's . . Center City Enjoy |
Whole address: 1237 East Passyunk Ave |
This a topic which can spark controversy in Philly. My favorite is Geno's at 9th and Passyunk, across the street from Pat's. Another favorite of many Philadelphians is Jim's Steaks at 4th and South.

Being from south philly, i can tell you that Pat's Steaks lives entirely on name recognition. Jim's Steaks on South Street is pretty good. So is Geno's across from Pat's STeaks. There are so many steak shops in Philly, and they all vary. It's the bread, I swear you can't get rolls that good anywhere else!

And the debate begins!!
Unfortunately, the best steaks are found in the suburbs...my personal fav is Rich's deli in Fort Washington. If you will be visiting friends, ask them for their opinion. Every part of the cheese steak is important: the steak (I found Pats/Genos/Jims to be tough steak), the cheese (you want gooey ooey melt in your mouth cheese!), the bread (must be soft enough, yet not soggy), and the toppings (fried onions, mushrooms, peppers, etc). I've tried all the famous places, but they don't compare to the small town deli's... good luck!! |
There was a great article on this in the NY Times yesterday. http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/28/dining/28PHIL.html . You gotta register, but it's free, permanent and painless. As a side benefit, you can search for travel articles going back to 1996.
