Philadelphians -- Does Anyone Remember ...?
I'm researching a book and trying to recall the fare to ride the elevated train in 1977. I'm thinking maybe thirty-five cents. Does anyone remember? Haven't had any luck on the SEPTA sites.
Thanks! |
Here's how I found your answer:
Did a Google{R} search for septa fares history Amongst the hits was one described as "Timeline results for septa fares history" Clicking on that link, it showed, decade by decade, archived stories in various online newspaper on the topic. Going to the 1970s section, I found a 1971 story about the transit strike in Philly. The archived story included this sentence: "Septa recently raised the transit fare a nickel to thirty five cents..." I'd supply the exact URL, but it's a bunch of Google gobbledy gook. And I'm too lazy to use TinyURL. But I was able to find it in about two minutes, so you should as well. |
And, of course, most of us would have been using tokens! (The ones that were still imprinted "PTC", of course.)

Wow. Thank you so much!!!
Much appreciated. I'll let you know if I need a full-time research assistant ;-). |
Yeah, but do you remember Pete Boyle and Willy The Worm?
|
Ah yes Amy,
I remember using my PTC tokens all through high school! And yes...I remember Willy the Worm! |
"of course, most of us would have been using tokens! (The ones that were still imprinted "PTC", of course.)"
I just found one of these when I was cleaning out my jewelry box on Saturday. I saved it. |
