Philadelphia with a 15 year old
I will be driving to DC from NY with my son. Would love to stop in Philly for lunch, spend the day sightseeing and dinner in the Italian neighborhood. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What are your son's interests? There are many historical sites to explore, art museums, etc.

Hard to narrow down. He is going into 9th grade. Maybe a more modern art museum, anything Presidents, constitution. Sorry to be so vague.

I think with one day, you should concentrate on the historical area. Come in off 95 and park here: Autopark at Independence Mall | The Philadelphia Parking Authority Get tickets ahead of time for Independence Hall. See the Liberty Bell. You can see it from outside but I’ve found that the docent’s talk makes the wait to get inside worthwhile. Definitely visit the Constitution Center. Walk down Elfreth’s Alley skip the Betsy Ross house. He’d probably like the US Mint. https://www.visitphilly.com/areas/ph...p-things-to-do If you want to expose him to art, he may find the Magic Gardens interesting. https://www.phillymagicgardens.org/ For lunch, you can get a Philly cheesesteak at Jim’s on South St or go up to Reading Terminal Market for a huge variety of lunch counters. Is there a specific reason you want to go to the “Italian neighborhood?” There are some red gravy restaurants in the Italian market area but I’ve found them to be pretty mediocre, the neighborhood is transitioning, and the parking is horrible. There are some really good restaurants on East Passyunk in South Philadelphia but I’d suggest Ubering there. I like Spasso Grill that’s right there near the historic area. Perfect suggestions and itinerary. Many Thanks!

I second the Magic Gardens. Very interesting. You can see some of it through the gate if you get there after hours. There are also many other interesting displays throughout that neighborhood. The Eastern Penitentiary is interesting also but it is a ways away from the historical district.
