philadelphia hotels

I live in NYC and want to go to Philadelphia to visit the Barnes collection... among other things.
I could do a day trip but think a stayover would be nice for an old lady. Have stayed in Sofitels and liked them... but are there any other suggestions? I like nice... but not trendy....don't want to have to buy a new wardrobe to stay at a hotel -:)

The Sofitel in Philadelphia is nice but it's starting to show some wear. Look at the rates at the Palomar. I think it's about at the same level as the Sofitel. If you would prefer something a little more elegant, investigate The Rittenhouse Hotel. It's lovely. Of course, closer to the Barnes is the Four Seasons which is also very nice.

Thank you Birdie... the Trip Advisor reviews are confusing. (Tho the Sofitel reviews sound accurate.) Will check out the Palomar.

Gwendolynn, the Palomar is almost directly across the street from the Sofitel. I have stayed at both and would choose Palomar over Sofitel at this point just because it is newer. You may find it a a bit trendy, but I doubt you would need a new wardrobe:)

Four Seasons is a nice choice and closest to the Barnes, but the Rittenhouse is my favorite Philly hotel. Classy, refined and in the best location right on Rittenhouse Square surrounded by great restaurants and shopping. If money is no object, that would be my choice. I've never been overly impressed by the Ritz Carlton although some of the rooms have great views of City Hall.

Make sure to book your reservation for the Barnes well in advance (at least 2 weeks I would say). They are constantly sold out at this point and I would hate to see you make the trip to Philly and not be able to go.

Enjoy!

It seems that you and I have the same taste in hotels, cat. Have you stayed at the Inn at Penn? I didn't recommend it for you, Gwendolynn, because it wouldn't be convenient for the Barnes but it is nice.
