Philadelphia Dining
 

I just wanted to share this link to an article in today's Philadelphia Inquirer about restaurant bargains.

Not all of these places are in areas easily accessible for visitors, but many are in/near Center City (e.g., Tampopo, Cafe Fulya, Good Dog, everything listed under the "Value prix-fixe menus") and are places I would definitely recommend to anyone, visitor or local.

I read this, and it seems to me that these are good bargains for the locals who want a bargain.

But I'm not sure that a visitor would come away with a reasonable feeling of "Philadelphia Dining". ((*))

I have to respectfully disagree with Jed. I think this article represents some of the best of "Philadelphia Dining." Visitors to our city need to know that Philadelphia isn't just cheesesteaks, roast pork sandwiches, soft pretzels and the Reading Terminal Market. Philadelphians are also understandably proud of our BYOB's, gastropubs and neighborhood ethnic restaurants.

True, a visitor won't travel to Chester County for indian food at Devi, but they should absolutely consider Minar Palace, which is much beloved by Center City residents. Also, many visitors explore the Italian Market but might not know about the amazing Mexican food available around 9th and Wash. Admittedly, the city does an excellent job of publicizing our most well known BYOB's with the interactive map (http://www.gophila.com/BYOBMap/), but how many visitors staying at the Society Hill Sheraton or the Hyatt on Delaware Ave would know that they can walk a few blocks from their hotel to Cafe Fulya for a very reasonable and very tasty BYOB meal in one of the city's most adorable old neighborhoods, Queen Village (which, by way of further education for anyone visiting, is also home to the eastern end of South Street, fabric row and Head House Square and a wonderful Sunday morning farmers market).

Therefore, it is my humble opinion that many of the restaurants on this list not only provide our guests with a taste of Philadelphia (at a bargain), but also provide a truer sense of our city and the people and neighborhoods that make it so special.

If you had 1 night in Philly...staying at theLowes hotel..have a car... And wanted a good, but very reasonably meal where would you go? We like ALL types of food. Nothing fancy, just good, it could be a dive.

I would head to the Art Musueum area. Plenty of parking (since you had a car) and plently of great restaurants, with great beer selections.


Jack's firehouse is great for a nice meal that is more upscale.
St Steven's Green for a bit more casual feel.
If you want delicious pub fare that is super cheap, head to bishop's collar.

I can go on...i can't think ofany resturants in Fairmount i would not go to

I would stop by the liquor store, pick up some vino, and head right to Tre Scalini!!

I suggest Good Dog at 15th and Locust for amazing burgers and beer. Or Vietnam (not Vietnam Palace) in Chinatown. Both are walkable from your hotel.

If you do want to take your car out and see a bit more of the city, in the Northern Liberties neighborhood there is great pub fare (and great local beers) at N. 3rd and the Standard Tap.

Or, if it's not too cold out, drive to Tony Lukes at Front & Oregon and have a Pork Italian (a roast pork sandwich with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone).

kmkmn, I'd get up in the morning and go to Cereality!!!

It is pricy, but you'll never find anything else like it!

Two quick points on Cereality . . .

1. You will find things like it because it's a franchise. There are lots of Cerealities around the country and there's at least one other chain, Cereal Bowl, that I can think of based on the same concept, and probably some independent "cereal restaurants" too.

2. Didn't the Cereality at Penn close a few months ago? Has it reopened under a new owner? Is there another location that is still open? And on that note (i.e., unique food options on Penn's campus), does anyone know if the the custom cupcake delivery service is still around? I remember it garnered a bit of press (City Paper, Daily Candy) when it started but haven't really heard about it since.
