Sherry, we just hiked down the Grand Canyon last May. Here is my advice to you: you can go down, no problem. Up is a little harder; the first portion is relatively easy, but after Indian Garden, it is steeper. This said, there is plenty of water on the Bright Angel trail ( 3 different water stations), so, to limit the weight you have to carry, I would go up that trail, and you will be fine with only 2 water bottles, not the gallon that they recommend. Take your time, it is not a race. I walked with a 75 year old men who was going back up after coming down the same day, and had bad arthritis in the hips. If he could do it, you can to!
At the bottom, Phantom Ranch, it is supremely hot: 125 Farenheight when we were there..no kidding. So, don't bring a lot of clothes. One outfit to go down, which you can wash once at the bottom, it will dry in no time. Another outfit to hang around in, very light flip flops. Very light sweater if any at all. If you bring a flashlight, bring the head type, it is light, and frees your hands. Once you make it to the bottom, you will certainly have very stiff legs. But if you plan on spending 2 nights down, find your courage on the morning of the first day down, and go hike Ribbon Falls. The trail there is beautiful, easy, with very little elevation, and it will get you out of the stifling cauldron at Phantom Ranch. By the way, the trick to stay comfortable at the bottom (as recommended by the rangers), is to keep yourself wet. Pour water on your head, your clothes and repeat as needed.. Worked perfect for me, I had a great time despite the heat. Also, Phantom Ranch has a canteen with AC, where people gather to talk, play cards, eat and drink. There are 2 ranger programs a day, quite interesting. I am going back this year, so maybe we'll meet down there! Good luck.
