(I know how old this thread is, but still relevant). Our daughter (now 23) was "nominated" for a variety of these trips - but none of the teachers who nominated her actually did so. I believe they match students from public honor roll listings with public lists of teachers from the schools. And in the instances where a teacher or principal actually nominate someone, I believe they are misguided as to the nature of such an "honor". I have never heard of anyone being turned down who was willing to pay their money.
Not saying the trips are not fun, educational, etc - just objecting to the misrepresentation.
I think it is very similar to the variety of emails I get stating I have been nominated or selected to appear in some Whos Who of something or other. No one nominated me. They got my name from an alumni association list, professional organization or something similar. And for the nominal fee of $49.95 to cover costs and purchase the book with the listings, I could be so honored. These should be titled Whos Who of Suckers
