Penn Station to Times Square
 

I am taking my mom, 71 yrs old, to NYC for her first trip. I have torn a ligament in my ankle and am in a walking cast. What is easiest way to get from Penn Station to Marriott Marquis (Times Square) morning of 12/20 at about 10am? I am thinking cabs may be too busy. If so, what is best route by subway with minimal walking? (I know walking is necessary in NYC and usually I love this). 2) Also, which store has the best Christmas windows this year? 3) She wants to go to Little Italy- what restaurant do you recommend- not fine dining, just family, nice, good food, decent prices? I have eaten at a few restaurants there but really do not know which ones are highly recommended. 4) Is there any way to show her Wollman skating rink and minimize my walking? 5) Has anyone been to the Christmas market at Bryant Square and Union Square- which is more like markets in Europe? Thanks- this is really bad timing for me!

Take the 1, 2, or 3 from Penn Station to Times Square. It's only one stop, but a bit twisty underground at both stops. Taking a cab would be stressful and frustrating (trying to hail one down, and then trying to make sure it's going in the right direction), but probably involve less walking and stairs.

The Christmas windows I've seen so far have been kind of awful. Lord & Taylor usually goes all out, but this year, Bloomingdales and Bergdorf's didn't seem to try very hard.

Wollman Rink is not very far into the park. If you enter the park by the Plaza Hotel, it's only about a five-minute walk.

I think you'll find the one at Union Square to be slightly more European, but that might be a matter of opinion.

There are 2 cab stands/lines at the exits of Penn Station. Both are well marked. I have taken the trip to the Marquis from here many times and it usually costs around $7. The line should be very short this early in the morning so you should not have to wait

From Penn Station look for the exit to 33/34 and 8th AVe, and you are heading uptown. There is a cab stand right there at the exit.

I loved the windows at Macy's and Lord&Taylor this year, very well done, heading to Saks this week.

I also love the Christmas Market at Bryant Park, with the ice rink in the middle, makes for a very Christmasy feel to the market.

In Little Italy, I recommnd Luna's which is close to Canal St, not alot of atmosphere, but very good food and well priced. Also lots of places to stop for desert there as well.

I live near Little Italy - I think Il Palazzo is a nice place to go for an italian meal. Make sure you stop at Ferrara's afterwards for some pastries!

As other have mentioned, Da Nico and Il Cortile are also pretty good places in Little Italy.

Take a cab. There are stairs involved with the subway, and if you're carrying baggage, it's going to be difficult given your sore ankle. Withou bags, you may be able to manage.
