Penn Hotel NY

Anyone have any relatively recent experience...the trip advisor reviews are not great but it has been recommended on another board I visit. Looking for some traveler opinions. For 4 in 1 room with 2 beds its $351.50 ($50 for the 2 extra ppl) a night at the end of Oct which I find to be great. $271 for 2 but not sure if we go through route we will still get the 2 beds and what they will do if they find 4 of us there? We don't plan to spend much time in the room and cant' see spending much over that, although I prefer the Hyatt, etc. myslef;)

Suggestions?

It's a truly horrid hotel. Stay there if you can't find anything else in your price range, but avoid it if at all possible. (Yes, I've actually had to stay the night there.)

Better by far is the Milford Plaza, which is often about the same price and actually in a much better location.

Do you mean the Hotel Pennsylvania , near Madison Square Garden? Almost uniformly bad experiences posted here.
as far as sneaking 4 people into a room for 2--don't. You may be in violation of fire laws and you could be thrown out of the hotel for violation ofother laws (you basically sign a contract when you check into a hotel. If you say 2 people,4 is a no-no). Not to mention that as you have suggested, the room might be too small

Most NYC hotel rooms in general do NOT have 2 beds. If you need 2 bed, you must specifiy with your reservation.

Put your dates in kayak.com and see what other hotels are available in your pricerange.

Yes thats the one...thats why I asked, trip advisor shows the same. Shoot. We'll check out the Milford Plaza. Any other recommendations? We have looked at Jersey City as an alternative but only find $20-40 diff per night which doesn't seem worth it if you add train fair to the city.

What about getting 2 beds on priceline or hotels.com...they say not guaranteed but if you put in 4 ppl don't they have to give you a place to sleep?

MFNYC Sep 20th, 2007 10:50 AM

If you bid on priceline they only guarantee a room for 2. The regualr priceline booking, is like booking anywhere else. Those rates are nothing special. Kayak compares rates on several sites so it's a good resource when seaching for the best deals. I have found the booking directly with the hotels, either by phone or by their websites, is just as good, if not better, than using these other booking sites (like hotels or expedia).

Courtyard Marriott's have double bedded rooms for 4 and have been getting good reviews here, although something under $300 probably may be tough.

Your earlier post has some helpful responses. Did you check out som eof the suggestions given there?

Read this about the Hotel Pennsylvania.

(And that is actually MUCH better than the experiences I've had there. LOL)

This place has been a dump for some time but one person's dump is someone else's "good value/good location." You can get 2 double beds in a room for $315 plus tax at the Super 8 or the Red Roof Inn (both on applecorehotels.com) Either would be better imo.

don't they have to give you a place to sleep

Simple answer....No.

You could also try putting in priceline bids for two rooms with a very low dollar amount, say $179, which if it worked, would net you two rooms in your budget. Of course, your computer might laugh at you and you might still end up with the same hotel, but nothing ventured nothing gained, and since you're not actually dealing with live people the potential embarassment at your chutzpah is fairly minimal.

dmlove Sep 20th, 2007 11:23 AM

Can you do that on priceline - ask for 2 rooms at the same hotel?

persimmondeb Sep 20th, 2007 11:31 AM

I'm not absolutely sure. I think you have to put in two completely separate bids, but how many hotels in NY are going to offer rooms at that price? If it works at all it would be almost guaranteed to be the same hotel. You could also try the Larchmont downtown, they're small and they book fast but they often have doubles for under $200. It's pretty, and quite decent, but European style with a shared bath.

You can bid for multiple rooms on Priceline (I think 3 or 4) but ofcourse that may reduce your odds of getting a room. Depends on how many nights you need and what else is going on. Hotwire.com is an option. If you find something that sounds good there (you can specify 4 to a room) you can figure out what hotel it is using hotwire hotel list on betterbidding.com Availability on hotwire also can predicet whether Priceline has inventory for those dates.

350 bucks for the Hotel Pennsylvania??!!?? Or as Dave Barry says, the Shpennsylvania. Sheesh....

It was every bit as bad as everyone says when I stayed there a number of years ago. Definitely try kayak.com and see what comes up - you'd almost certainly find something better.

GOOD NEWS!

Apparently the Hotel Pennsylvania is scheduled to close imminently, probably for condo conversion. And not a moment too soon! I wonder where all the roaches, rats, bed bugs, and creepy people will go???

I just checked Oct. 26th and 27th (don't know your exact dates), and for $399 plus tax, you could get a 2-bed room at the Courtyard on E. 40th or the Hampton Inn on W. 24th., the Holiday Inn on W. 57th is even less expensive. Any of those has got to be infinitely better.

wliwl Sep 20th, 2007 02:33 PM

^ Actually, it appears they are going to just tear it down and build a skyscraper there (offices).

livitup Sep 20th, 2007 04:11 PM

We were able to book a room for 4 people at the Hampton Inn on 31st Street. We had to cancel, but did manage to get this room for 4 people. It was very reasonable.

I stayed there circa 1994 and I can see it's gotten worse since then (I didn't think that was possible). Luckily I only paid $99 per night back then.

It's a shame because back in the 1940s that was a good hotel.....and there was a Big Band hit song entitled with the hotel's phone number (Pennsylvania 6-5000).

More recently it was the official hotel for the big dog show in town (I'm fairly certain) . I guess the dogs don't even like the place anymore LOL
