Pecans

Heading up to NC this weekend, looking for some good pecans in Georgia. Will be coming up I 95, anyone have a suggestion not too far off the interstate?

Thanks

I picked up a brochure for this place at the Bluffton Seafood and Crafts Festival a week or so ago:

We ordered 24 lbs of pecans by mailorder just yesterday. They say the new crop just came out. I don't know anything about them but thought I'd offer you the info.

If you come close to Florence SC there is a great pecan place there. Name--Starrs? Truth be told, Costco has great fresh pecans.

Young's Pecans! It's right off 95 on 52 in Florence, SC. Wonderful pecans and a great gift shop. I go every chance I get.

They are a bit more expensive this year due to the drought and the high demand from China. I buy mine at Kroger, shelled in little zip lock packages.

My DAR sells bags at Christmas. They're good too.

suewoo, thanks for the great info, went to Youngs, it was a little out of the way for me but well worth the trip, left Concord and took the scenic route to Florence, great shop, nice people and fantastic free samples. Highly recommend!

I'm so glad! Did you go down through Cheraw? Such a nice town, I think. When I go from Charleston to Greensboro I go that way. Beats heck out of the interstate.

Young's really does have the best pecans. They used to sell the shells for mulch. I got some bags there once, put it in the garden beds and the next morning, all the squirrels were going nuts! Too funny.

Hope you had a great trip. I remember when Concord was sleepy!

I remember when you could even drive through Concord without stopping!! Gridlock now!!
We used to go to the beach through Cheraw also.

I went through McBee and Darlington, never heard of McBee and never been through Darlington. Concord is gridlock but I love that town. Love those towns where everyone sitting on the porch waves when you go by. Thanks so much for the recommendation.

Do they still sell pecans in bulk and then either there or someplace else they put them in a machine that just cracks the shells enough so you can by hand take out the nice pecan halves? I remember when my parents lived in Georgia after retirement we would buy pounds of them and sit by the fireplace shelling them - with the shells giving a wonderful aroma when thrown into the fireplace.

gail, I don't know. Here's their website. All this is making me homesick!

Here's a list of pecan shellers and sellers -

suewoo, that sparked a memory of pecan shell mulch. I think the Stone Mountain pecan company gave the shells away - or maybe the price was really low. The yorkie didn't like the sharp edges so it was a one-time deal for us. I just googled to see if they were in business...and it looks like they are in Monroe now, near Good Hope. I LOVE Good Hope. We used to just pick them off the ground. It's one of the things I never expected to have to BUY. Unshelled, that is. One time we lived in the middle of a pecan grove. Literally. Hmmm...I've got some investigatin' to do. ;)

My friends have trees but the squirrels usually get to them all before I do.

MollyinFL Nov 13th, 2011 07:20 AM

There are a few trees here but they are such a pain to crack, I got 36oz of beautiful pecan halves for 25.00. Not sure if that is such a great buy, but they are big and fresh.

Thanks to all of you I just ordered 25 pounds of "cracked" pecans from the golden kernal website listed above. Hopefully they will get here in time so after Thanksgiving dinner we can sit around and drink and shell pecans.

I think I am out of my mind and may be the one who is cracked.

suewoo Nov 13th, 2011 08:12 AM

Hahaha! That's funny! gail, you're not cracked. You will enjoy reliving your childhood. Maybe. :)
