pearl harbor and accommodations
 

We are thinking about adding two nights to our trip to Kauai in order to end with a visit to Pearl Harbor. I was wondering about suggestions on where to stay. Is it necessary to have a car or would there be shuttles or maybe public transportation that would get us to/from the airport, pearl harbor, our hotel/condo, etc. I was thinking about staying near Wikiki. I just have no idea on distances, traffic, etc. in this area and to Pearl Harbor. Thank so much!

It might be better to add those two nights
to Oahu, because that is where you will find Pearl Harbor, just west of Honolulu.

I'm sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. We are definitely planning on being on Oahu those last two nights. I'm just trying to figure out where to stay, if we'll need a car, etc.

I would rent a car, stay in Waikiki and spend one day at Pearl Harbor (get there early!) and one day driving around the island with an early stop to snorkel at H Bay and seeing the North Shore. Be sure to stop for some shaved ice!

Eat dinner and watch the sun set at Hau Tree Lanai restaurant at the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel at Waikiki

It's been a few years since we went there but I remember that it was very easy. We had a rental car and simply drove there and visited the USS Arizona National Memorial on our own. It is part of the National Park Service <http://www.nps.gov/usar/> and admission is free. If you are AAA members, get a Hawaii map before you leave home and it will show you how to get there. Again, very easy.

There are many organized tours and most, I suspect, pick up at all the major hotels. Gray Line <http://tinyurl.com/33dfbr> is one of these. AAA usually gives a 10% discount if you are members.

I am not sure which option is cheaper. That might depend on how many people are in your party and where the break even point is. However, you might have more flexibility with the rental car and could come and go as you wished.
