Peanut sticks
 

My wife is crazy for peanut sticks from when she was a kid and visited relatives in the Buffalo NY area. Does anyone know if they're still made and if so, where can they be gotten? thanks!

I'm anxious to hear the answer to this question as I've never heard of peanut sticks. Is that something that's unique to the north? I grew up in the south.

The recipe is from New Zealand, and uses different measures than us. Adronckinva, ask your wife is this sounds like it could be what she remembers. I've never heard of it, but it sounds yummy!

yes, peanut stick donuts. my better half many chime in soon with whatthey "really are".

I'm from 'peanut country'...no kidding, this is the area peanuts are grown and the highlight of our year is the Peanut Festival, where they throw peanuts during the parade and there are bins of peanuts all over the fairgrounds for sampling, but I've never heard of peanut sticks!

Hi. I'm Adrockinva's wife. The best way I can describe Peanut Sticks are that they are oblong sticks of doughnut that are rolled in these crunchy things that aren't exactly peanuts, but look like chopped peanuts. They are SOOOOOOOO good. I would LOVE to track some down again. I know they have to still be made in the Buffalo area, they are a specialty of that area of NY. Anyone know of a bakery in the Buffalo area where they are still sold?

I don't buy donuts very often, so I'll have to check around for you.

They really are just long shaped peanut donuts. Personally, I haven't seen them in a while but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Check back to this post in a few days and hopefully I'll have some info for you!

I just googled it and there was at least two places you can order over the internet: LittleMissMuffin Donuts and Stan's Donuts. You may look further and find more wesites.

Adro: I think they were mostly made by local bakeries like Freddie's (closed), etc.

My mother thinks Dunkin' Donuts makes them. I'll check out Tim Horton's for you and a few other places, but I think the peanut sticks are slowly fading away.......

I am now on a mission to find peanut sticks. I also need to get a life!

I live in upstate NY (near Albany) and I think Dunkin Donuts makes them too. Maybe only in this part of the country?? I swore off donuts years ago, so I don't know if they still make them. Good luck finding them -- it sounds like something my DH would love!

I'm married for a former Buffalonian who is mad for peanut sticks. Everytime we go to visit the relatives, we stock up at Wegman's or Tops (supermarkets). Both stores sell them in the bakery section. They are also sold in local doughnut shops, but not sure about chains like Dunkin Donuts & Tim Horton's. The only way I can think of getting them outside of the Buffalo area is to find someone who will mail them to you.
Now for the authenticity issue - there are indeed some that are rolled in crunchy things that look like peanuts, but, according to my expert, those are not the real deal. True peanut sticks are rolled in peanuts! Since I have a deadly peanut allergy, I can't offer personal experience.

I was shopping in Budwey's grocery store tonight, and their bakery had peanut sticks!!!! I was so tempted to get one.

Budwey's is in N. Buffalo on Kenmore Avenue near Englewood Avenue.

Sorry, but I warned you that I would go on a mission to find peanut stick donuts! I posted on Tripadvisor.com's Buffalo forums and here are two responses:

"The best ones are at TOPs I am not sure if all of them make them, but the one on Delaware Road still makes them. Also you may try Paulas donuts which is on Englewood and Kenmore Ave. They have great donuts, the baker is outstanding."

"Dunkin Donuts is certainly one of the best, Maryvale and Union or Delaware in Kenmore or Delta Sonic on Walden...Famous donuts on Main across from the Lasalle station is a good bet but I am not sure if they are the stick variety as opposed to the classic round."

Peanut sticks are a treasured memory from my misspent and then underappreciated youth in PA. The source was Krispy Kreme (though others had imitations) and they were cake doughnuts in the shape of a large cigar that were dipped in a glaze then rolled in chopped peanuts. Though a southern company, the local KK franchise was owned by a local family (and managed by the parents of the gifted comedy writer Michael Patrick King) and considered a local treasure. Schools were always selling KK donughts for fund raisers. At the shop itself you coould pick up a couple of these gems, sold in waxed paper bags, still warm from the kitchen. And when funds were low (as they usualy were!) you could pick up a bag of "seconds" - the ones that got broken during preparation, lacking in appearnce but retaining every bit of the calorie laden deliciousness. When Dunkin Donuts moved in people laughed at the hubris, likening it to opening a Pizza Hut in the nearby town of Old Forge famous for at least one mom and pop italian restaurant and pizza palace on virtualy every block. (Search this forum for "Old Forge pizza" for some discussion about favorites.) DD served up a pale imitation using a yeast raised donut stick rather than a cake donught - a very distant second. Alas, now that KK has gone big time, they no longer make peanut sticks. When I inquired about the product at one of the now ubiquitous KK outlets the staffer told me they stopped making them due to concern about liability around peanut allergies.

Oops - hit that button prematurely... The New Zealand recipe above sounds like a nifty little beer snack but is not the peanut stick doughnut. I was in the new york area this past winter visiting. There was a dunkin donut shop near my daughter; since I rarely ever have donuts and since I was on vacation I decided to go in and gat a "peanut stick" as if it was as common a donut as a jelly filled one. I was told they don't have them and never did. My daughter just alerted me to this thread.

Having grown up in Buffalo I was addicted to them as a kid...the best were the warm ones at Freddy's donuts as I was coming or going from Offerman Stadium to see the Bisons.
Unfortunately both Freddy's and Offerman are gone -as is my youth:-(
Hopefully we will be back in the Buffalo area and now that I know it is a rarety, I will add it to my list of foods to sample.
PS They are made with real peanuts!

Peanut sticks are still made. We just came back from Buffalo. Of course we brought back peanut sticks. Most doughnut shops in the Buffalo area make them, Yes they are a donut, rolled to form a stick and then glazed and rolled in crushed peanuts. Definately a must try if you're in buffalo. I have yet to find any bakery in florida that makes them. We got ours at Paula's in Buffalo. Wegman's and Budwey's also carry them.

Yes there is such things as peanut sticks i am from scranton pennsylvaina the only ones i liked where made by krispy cream and for some reason they stopped making them so maybe if we all call and bug them they will make them again they are very tasting donuts not sweet

The peanut sticks must be stale by now, the original question was posted in 2005. Well, New Year's Eve but still 2005.

Some things are timeless classics - and Krispy Kreme peanut sticks are in this category.
