pay for hotel in advance

The hotel I will be staying at in New Orleans is asking for 10% now and the balance in 60 days which will be before I arrive there. This seems to be unreasonable but then I don't travel that much. What does it say about the hotel that they want all their money up front? What recourse do I have if everything is not up to par?

Thanks for any info.

John L

The request does seem unusual. Are going during the peak season, say, at Mardi Gras time?

No. It is parent's weekend at Tulane (and homecoming for alumni which is why I'm going) and I've been told that rooms are in short supply everywhere although NO does have a lot of hotel rooms! This is definitely the closest hotel to Tulane as well.

Is it a B&B or a small inn? They often will ask for 1st nite deposit or a portion of the bill. I'm staying in Yosemite NP at the Yosemite Lodge in a couple weeks & they charged my CC for the 1st night when I made the reservation.
B&B/small inn.

Thanks for all the quick replies by the way!

JL

Not unusual at all, John. This is actually fairly typical for small establishments in New Orleans. Even the major hotels sometimes require pre-payment of major events.

Knowing all the details, I'd say it makes sense, since the facility is the closest one to Tulane which makes it a prime spot for the occasion. If you won't agree, there certainly will be someone eager to take the room.

Well I guess it's ok to pay in advance. Thanks for the replies.

I just found out today that they hadn't mailed me the authorization I have to sign until yesterday*. I made the reservation a month ago!! And they want the balance within 60 days of the original date of the reservation. I hope there aren't any further delays.
(Typical New Orleans "manana" attitude strikes again.)

*I was hoping I could phone in the balance using the credit card I made the reservation with but they need written authorization, which I don't have a problem with except that they are so slow in sending it out. (Maybe I'll revive the thread I tried to start about this hotel/B&B.)
