Paso Robles Wineries
 

I will be visiting the Paso Robles wineries for a couple of days in late September. I would appreciate any recommendations for your favorite wineries (esp. for zinfandels!)

We had such fun tasting at Eberle. Try Turley for upscale zins and cabs. Justin is great... wish I could come along!

Another vote for Eberle. Always an enjoyable experience. Friendly staff and good wine.

I'd skip Martin and Weyrich Winery. Very commercialized and the wine wasn't worth the stop.

Robert Hall Winery is worth a visit. We had a lot of fun with the tasting group.

Grey Wolf Cellars offers some good wines.

Many of the local supermarkets offer the wines at a discounted price as compared to the wineries. The Costco in San Luis Obispo also has a wide selection of local wines. The merlot from Wild Horse is always a good choice.

Tobin James is known for its "badcious" zins and reds. They have very reasonably priced reds ($12-20) and they also have an incredible "James Gang" higher quality line which costs more ($25-40) . ALso a few dessert wines. The owners are very friendly- very nice place.

The wine cellar is built at the site of an old stagecoach stop, and you will feel like you are stepping back in time in the tasting rm.; there are lots of antiques, etc.- mucho character. The tasting rm has a really cool old antique mahogany bar built in Misouri in the 1800s (see picture at: http://www.tobinjames.com/club.asp)

Claire Silver, the wife of one of the owners, looks over the tasting rm. and sometimes the two owners, Toby James and Lance Silver, come in too. Very nice group of people; you'll be made to feel at home.

Be sure to visit Turley. They have great Zins that are not easy to buy outside of the tasting room. They're located not far from Hwy. 101 in Templeton. If it is close to meal time, stop at McPhees Grill in Templeton for a great meal in a casual atmosphere.

Agree with Turley - arguably the producer with the best zinfandel anywhere today.

Well, these two don't have zins, but they are our best wineries; Tablas Creek and Linne Calodo. They specialize in rhone reds and their wines are always highly rated.

And another vote for Turley. Really wonderful but expensives Zins. But sooo well worth every drop.

send an e-mail to [email protected]. Joy owns a wine store called the Wine Outlet and she knows every wine in SLO county. If you want to buy any local wine, her prices are great too. I would also agree that Eberle make some good zin. They source from different vineyards, so you could taste same wine, same maker, but different vineyards.

I agree with cjstobbs. The wine outlet store is in the outlet mall in Atascadero. We visit the wineries but buy the wine in her store. The prices are excellent.

Paso Robles is my hometown and though I've been gone a long time I know that the winery business is booming down there - now, I am not a wine drinker, but just for the fun of it you might want to check out Rotta Winery - this was originally Pesenti Winery and it has been in business forever. I can't vouch for their wines, but since they have been around forever you might just want to check it out. Also, the winefest is going on this weekend (16 September).

Rotta is wonderful! There tasting room is in a little corner of another business. It is family owned and operated. If you like sweet wines, they have a rosa that is FANTASTIC! We wished we bought more! Their dessert wines are fantastic as well!

Eagle Crest isn't bad. Can't miss their tasting room--it looks like a castle. No joke! And, if you get there right after they open, you might be treated to a few extra pours as the wine guide is trying them out as well. No cost here, which is nice. Also, there is no glass to worry about getting home.
