Party of 6--NYC: Car Service?

4 adults, two children (9 and 6) in October.

Arrive LGA at noon (Wed).

Hotel Holiday Inn Express (45th and 5th)

Depart Newark 11am (Sun)

I've put in June dates for Dial7 and got quotes for a large van:
LGA-hotel: $110
hotel to EWR: $137
(Couldn't get the addresses to load for Carmel)

We've used the express bus for EWR, but don't want to do it with the children. Too complicated with so many people.

Do experienced travelers agree this car service looks like the best option? I thought about 2 cabs from LGA but am not sure how much that would save.

What would you tip for 6 people/6 luggage?

If you take 2 regular cars, it would be cheaper (about $30 plus toll and tip) from LGA to Manhattan.
Midtown to Newark is about $45 plus toll/tip)
Are you sure you need a full sized van? Is there a mini van option?
I would call Carmel and Dial 7 and see what cars they actually have available.

The full size van was what popped up when I entered the number of persons. I'll call them.

By "two regular cars" did you mean just splitting up between two smaller car service vehicles?

Yes--two regular cars, whether taxis or private car service.

I would just take 2 taxis from LGA. No need to book ahead. The taxi ride is not too long and it will probably be cheaper than the van.

When I used Dial7 for a party of 8 from mid-town to EWR this past March, it was cheaper to use 2 town cars rather than a mini-van, even including tolls and tips.

I think the 2 car option sounds good for departure to EWR.

At arrival I imagine we'll pay the extra for the van. I know I don't want to miss the children's first sighting of the "big city". And I imagine all the adults will feel the same.

I know this is just me, but on leaving, I wouldn't want to be split from my group. What if one car breaks down, or runs out of gas or gets in a fender-bender? I'd rather be all together.

Hmmm.

But wouldn't that be true even if you're traveling in one car?!

Maybe we could stick close together. I haven't checked all the options yet. Will report back.

Sure, but at least you'd all be together. Noone would be at the airport wondering where the heck the other group is as the security line gets longer and longer and the scheduled departure time gets closer and closer!

Good news!
Miles program came through with in/out of LGA.

No worries about breaking down on the way to Newark! ;-)

Contact

strusserslimousineservice.com

and see what price they would charge for a stretch limo. If you're going to pay that sort of price, at least give the kids a thrill in one direction riding in a limo instead of a van.

Good thinking. I'm ashamed I didn't think of it myself!

Limo rates aren't too bad considering they already include 20% tip and tolls. Thanks.

About a year ago, Carmel charged us $65 for a mini-van from midtown to LGA; there were five of us, but room for more.

Well, I keep coming up with new twists.

The two guys said they want to "take the subway" from LGA. I told them I thought it was a bus, not subway. OK by them.

So it will probably just be me, the two kids and their mom. With just 4 of us, I guess I'll hire a regular sedan service. We'll take all the suitcases with us, leaving the guys free to dive into the hustle bustle unencumbered.

Maybe do the limo when we leave.

If anyone really wants to do the subway from LGA, then they should take the Q33 bus to Roosevelt Ave. subway stop in Queens and connect to the F train, getting out at the 5th Ave stop, which is 3 blocks from your hotel.

The M60 bus, which connects to the 6 train at 125th Street in Manhattan, will get them there as well, but it's less convenient and a longer walk from Grand Central (more than twice as far).

I rarely advocate a car service from LGA. It's almost always easier and cheaper to get in a regular taxi. If you go the car service route, call from the luggage pick-up area after the bags start coming out; you'll still probably have to wait 10 or 15 minutes for the car, depending on how quickly it comes. But you'll be at the hotel about 30 minutes before the two taking the subway.
