Parking Questions
 

Hey everyone, I live in nyc and have family driving in to the city. I told them that parking is a pain, but they are insistent on driving. Where can they park for a reasonable price for about 4-5 days. I live on roosevelt island and although we have a parking garage it is likely full, and it is rented out only by the month i guess(what i've heard). I was thinking they should driv into NJ and park at one of the PATH stations and just take the hobo line to 33rd. But which station should they shoot for? They're coming in from michigan, so they will be driving straight through the center of PA into NJ. Any other suggestions?

What about parking at one of the NJTransit stations in NJ and taking the train in? Somewhere like Elizabeth?

What is Elizabeth? Is that the city in NJ or the station name?

Don't worry jlents, your car is three more times likely to be stolen in Elizabeth NJ than in New York City. The whole area is joy ride city - no way you want to leave a car there unless it's a lemon and you want to collect insurance money.

Have them park in a good suburb, like somewhere a bit north in Bergen Co.

A parking garage in Hoboken, NJ would be safer than the train station in Elizabeth (a town just west of lower Manhattan near Newark, NJ).

Parking at Port Authority parking garage just inside the Lincoln Tunnel probably wouldn't be exceedingly expensive, and would at least get them closer to Roosevelt Island than parking in Jersey.

I would have a look on iconparking.com and see where the cheapest place in Manhattan would be to leave the car. Who needs to be schlepping luggage and stuff from New Jersey. Where are they staying?

If they're staying with you, the other option is leaving it somewhere in Long Island City. I know there are a few open lots near the 23 st/Ely Ave. stop of the E train. Maybe you know some near the F train.

Well, Elizabeth was the first city that popped into my head. Maybe not the best idea.

I agree with mclaurie that it'd be alot of schlepping to have to train it in from NJ with luggage and then on to Roosevelt island. Just the idea of it exhausts me, and I live in Jersey.

If you really want NJ transit options I'd consider Summit, NJ (has parking deck and is on the Midtown direct line) or Metropark in Iselin, NJ - also has large parking deck and regular service to NYC Penn Station.

Metropark is accessible from Garden State Parkway exit 131

Summit, NJ is easiest accessed from Route 78 / Route 24

suggest that you get them to read this thread. Maybe they will see the problem differently if they know what others think.

If they drive an everyday car I would suggest that they park in Woodside Queens or Jackson Heights and take the subway to Roosevelt Island. There is plenty of good safe and free street parking without alternate side restrictions.
