My husband is having heart surgery in NY and I need to stay for about 3 weeks. I found a studio to sub on 14th st. but was wondering if anyone knows about parking? I have no problem with leaving the car and taking public transportation to and from the hospital, but do not know where to leave my car. Thank you for any help you can think of.

First let me say there are a LOT of scams on short term apt. rentals online so I really hope you know this is a good place that actually exists. Also, 14th st. is a big wide thoroughfare with crosstown buses running in both directions and can be very noisy if you face the front of the building. What hospital will he be in? Did they not offer some housing options?

For parking, you can look at iconparking.com to see what's nearby but you'll pay a fortune for 3 weeks. Depending on which direction you're coming from, for 3 weeks I'd consider parking the car outside Manhattan OR it may be cheaper to pay a monthly fee at a garage than daily for 3 weeks if they'll allow it. Post back with more details. Hoping he does great, btw.

14th Street between 7 and 8 is nororious for being the worst street in NYC for issuing parking tickets.

This is a cool little website that lets you compare parking rates by address - just plug in your address or neighborhood and it will give you daily or weekly garages rates , coupons for discounts, etc.

East 14th or W. 14th St? you won't be able to park for any length of time on 14th st. - it's all one hour meters all the way across. parking in NYC is an art - if your schedule is flexible and you understand the alternate side of the street parking schedule, you can park on the street for free, but be prepared to spend some time either sitting in your car - either looking for a spot or waiting for the no parking time to expire.
google NYC parking and read a little about it. You will probably want to just put the car in a garage for the duration.

wow you guys are great. We are coming from Binghamton NY so we are not familiar with the "City life". My husband is having surgery at Weil/Cornell on E 62 st. he's having a LVAD (left ventricle assist device) put in, then we go on the heart transplant list.

Thank you for the advise on the scam. I will be sure to check it out. The hospital really has no housing options, I did find Mircle house and have been in contact with them. I found the hospital not a big help at all.

I think I will look into a garage for a month. It will take the worries out. Unfortunatly I have to have my car, as I need to get my husband to the hospital.

You will not be able to park on the street for that long, unfortunately.

It may be cheaper to park in New Jersey. It's still going to be expensive (probably at least $10 per day). I don't think you can find a better price in Manhattan, but if you promise not to take your car out at all, you can probably do better than if you want in-out privileges. But parking in Manhattan costs about $400 per month.

You really should ask at the hospital itself. Most hospitals have a garage. They all charge, but they may give you a good rate for the longer term.

yeah, the garage will cost you about the cost of the sublet. if you must park in a garage (i certainly don't suggest parking on the street) try to find a garage closer to 1st ave, (and it doesn't necessarily have to be in near 14th.) they tend to be less expensive. where are you coming from? is it possible to get a ride/use mass transit into the city, and you can return to the car a day or two before you are due to leave?

There are mass transit options from Binghamton, but this fellow is in need of heart surgery and will be recovering from heart surgery on the return trip. I'm all for using mass transit but not in this instance.

Why not rent a car for your drive from Binghamton and turn it in on arrival in NYC? Then rent another one for the drive back. No need to park your own car in a garage for three weeks . . .

Sorry if I misunderstood--do you need a car every day? For daily trips, most NYers use taxis--much quicker than having to get a car out of a garage.

With the drop-off costs, a car rental might not be any cheaper. I'd use the hospital's parking as option 1, then a local garage or lot (either in Manhattan or not) as option 2. If you are coming from Binghamton, you'll probably have to go through NJ anyway, but it might be logistically easier to park in Brooklyn (perhaps look for a lot that's in Williamsburg, which is the first stop in Brooklyn on the L Train that goes along 14th Street).

Rental car drop-off fees may not be that bad & it could still make sense to rent a car & drop-off in Manhattan. Otherwise, Doug's suggestions are good. Parking it in a secure lot in Williamsburg, Brooklyn or in Newport, Jersey City or Hoboken, NJ will be much cheaper. Best wishes.

Please note that you should take a bus, subway, or taxi to the hospital from 14th Street. The hospital, it is an expensive neighborhood of an expensive city.

The thought of renting a car from Binghampton to NYC one way, makes a lot of sense.

I'd be curious to know what you're paying for this sublet and would like a link to it. There is housing right near the hospital at the Helmsley Medical building which has studio and 1 bedroom apts. It's certainly likely to be more expensive, but a lot more convenient and safe in terms of both area and knowing it's legit.

You might also check the price on the affinia.com website for the Affinia Gardens and Affinia 50, both suite hotels not too far. They may have some weekly rates if you phone.

If you think you're going to drive your husband back and forth to the hospital every day, that's crazy! No one here drives daily. Please explain.

I really think 14th st. is not a good location for you. If you're going to take the chance of renting an apt. there are many better options nearer the hospital.

On the bestparking.com website if you click monthly parking, there are some very good deals for around $200 for a month very far east near the hospital. The only reason to bring the car is if that's the only way you to get here safely for him. Do not even think about using it daily. Given that, is it still cheaper than renting a car?

The Belaire Center is another place affiliated with the hospitals that I remembered and might be cheaper than the Helmsley.

Parking on the street anywhere near thre is simly not an option. Tickets start at $150 and if you're towed it will cost in excess of $1000 to get the car back.

If you really need to bring the car into the city suggest you do a google search for garages in the area and find out the rate for a month. (If they have monthly spaces left.)

Depeding on where you;re coming from it might be much cheaper to take a car service into the city and home again at the end of the 3 weeks - and just leave your own car t home. (You won't be able to drive it around the city - sine parking costs so much every time you leave it somewhere. Public transit is convenient and much cheaper - and even a ab sometime wil still be a lot less than parking and reparking your car.)

Thank you everyone who responded. I have taken your advise and reserved a room with the Mircle House. What a great place. If anyone is coming to New York City for any kind of Medical reason, please advise them to contact this group. http://www.miraclehouse.org/ extremely nice people who understand and go out of thier way to help. They have several apartments around the city and I will be staying at W 43rd st.

After reading about the possibility of my sub being a scam (kind of had that feeling when I talked to the guy on the phone) thought I'd better look into a more reliable group. Glad I did. Hospital still no help with parking. Today I will look into the garage sites and make some calls.

I truely appericiate all the help you guys have given. I love this site and will recommend it to EVERYONE I know. I also will keep tabs to see if I can lend any advise.

Now that you're staying on west 43rd, you'll find that some of hte cheapest parking in Manhattan is in the open lots on the far west side. I'm not sure that's an attractive option in the middle of winter, but you might very well find a cheaper parking spot within walking distance of your apartment.

I didn't know about Miracle House so you've brought good information to us. I assume you know the hospital is on the east side (as far east as you can go) while you're on the west side. There's a crosstown bus on 42 st. It's not very quick, but it will get you there. You can then take a bus up 1st ave. (transfer is free) and down heading back on 2nd ave. If you're over 65, you can get a discounted fare. Let us know if you need any other help.

mclaurie et al has given good advice here, I would just add that it might be worth your while to take a west side subway line (the 1 train uptown) to 66th Street and then take the M66 bus across town, which stops right across the street from the hospital. And you can just do the reverse trip on the way back from the hospital. But when it gets closer to your stay, post back and ask any questions about day to day stuff, we'll all be happy to help.
