Parking in new york

I know this is a long shot but we will be touring connecticut and hope to spend a couple of days in new york city doing the sights.

As we will be in a hire car can anyone advise it they know of any (not too expensive) hotels that also have parking facilities.

If not how easy is it to park up your car?

You might want to consider, AnnRiley, the possibility of leaving the rental care in Connecticut and then taking the train (MetroNorth or Amtrak) into New York's Grand Central Terminal.

The railroad terminal is right in midtown, where you will be able to walk to your hotel and to all the various sites of interest.

Enjoy your visit!

If you are considering staying overnight in NY the Travel Inn at 515 West 42nd Street offers free parking for its guests.

Parking is not a big deal if you plan ahead. As Alya says, the Travel Inn has free parking, but if it's not nice enough, there's plenty of parking that's cheaper than what most hotels charge. nycgarages.com is a website that will estimate costs for you in various neighborhoods. Iconparking.com is a co. of garages around town that you can reserve a spot in advance. Also agree that depending on what your plans are, using the train in and out can also be cheaper than parking.

Travel Inn is the only hotel in NYC with free parking. All others will charge market rates - generally $30 per day and up. check out local garages - you MAY be able to get lower rates (iconparking.com).

There is one lower cost garage on the far west side in the lower 60's (don;t know the exact adddress) but then you have to get to/fro the garage for the hotel.

Depending on when you will be here (if on the weekend) you can park for free on the sidestreets in uptown residential neighborhoods. But - it can take a whille to find a place, you cannot leave ANYTHING in the car - and this won;t work during several days a week - due to alternate side of the street parking regulations for street cleaning.

Days of the week and exact times depend on the neighborhood. And don;t consider parking illegally - since if your car is towed it will cost more than $1000 (parking fine, towing fee and impound fee) to get it back.

If you plan to just use your car to come into the city, park it and not use it until you leave, that's better. If you plan to drive around during your visit, you'll be very frustrated with the traffic, one-way streets, lack of parking and will likely become a slave to your car. I get free car service at my firm to and from work, but I never use it except if I leave work late at night. I rather take the subway b/c it's a 10 min subway ride but with the car in traffic it usually takes me 30-45 min to get to work.

Also depending on where you'll be in CT, the metro north train may be easy to bring you into the city to Grand Central, so you could just leave your car in the CT train station parking lot.

Since you are going to be in Conn, why not just turn the rental back in, hop on the LIRR and take the train into Manhattan?

Parking will add $25-$75 per day to your rental.

If you're taking the train from Connecticut, it would be on Metro North, not the LIRR.

Return the car to Stamford, Connecticut, and take MetroNorth to the city. No-brainer, save money and hassle.

Parking will not be free at Metro North train stations and may even be hard to come by as many of the lots are permit only lots.

Why not turn the rental car in when you head to NYC and if you need one when you leave NYC, start a new rental. Why pay a daily rental fee just to pay to park it somewhere.
