Park City: Union Pacific Rail Trail
 

I'm all set to visit Utah next month and can hardly wait to get out there! Flying into SLC and my first stop is Park City. I want to rent a bike and pedal the UP Rail Trail - not the whole length, just until I've had enough and then head back. I understand there are bikes for rent at the trailhead in town but I am unable to find any specific information. Are reservations necessary? What can I expect to pay for a half-day rental?

I rented from a company named White Pine Touring right on the trail. My bike was in good condition and they were safety focused. One word of caution, take lots of water. I found no water sources on the portion of the trail I rode. Have fun!

I live in Park City and enjoy riding the rail trail. You can go for many miles , but if you start from town, remember it's agradual downhill out. The return can be tough to killer hard if you aren't used to the altitude/the wind is blowing. I have personally rescued a couple of people from FL who could not make it back. It all depends on your condition.

Also be sure to geta map of the trail system. There are so many paved and mtn biking trails and most of themare far more scenic thanthe rail trail.

Dayle: I don't plan to go very far, probably about 1 1/2 hours down the trail before back-tracking. Although I'm from South Carolina (low altitude), I'm in pretty good shape so hopefully I'll make it back to PC without having to call for a dust-off!

Are rentals readily available for walk-ins, or should I reserve in advance?

I went with a group of about six. We had no reservation and no wait. Of course,the sure bet is to call ahead.

Take water! I am from NC and the dry air really nailed me.

If you're in pretty good shape, there are a lot more interesting trails than the Rail Trail. Will you be mountain biking? The Armstrong Trail is a much more fun trail, unless you are looking for straight and simple, and there are bike rentals at the bottom of that as well.
