"They are unwilling to be flexible about check-in time."

Like most hotels -- they won't guarantee earlier check-in, but if you arrive early, chances are often good that if a room is made up and available you CAN check in earlier. As I recall, we checked in just after lunch and yes, we got our room.

I can't remember the last time I found a hotel in NYC that had a check-in time earlier than 3 PM, even if you're payinng upwards of $800 or so a night. So 4 PM for a "discount" is hardly out of the range.

It's a big hotel, so there is likely to be a room before 4pm, but it all depends on when you arrive and how busy they are. Most hotels do not run completely full in January/February, so there's a good chance this one will not as well.

As I said, it's an ok hotel. Nothing great, nothing horrible. And you can usually get it for a good price, which seems a decent trade-off. The hotel has been renovating rooms and floors for a few years, but I don't know if all the rooms have been renovated yet, so no promises there.
