Parents Trip!!!

Hi,

It's time for our annual Parents Trip. We always take the kids on a big summer vacation and then get away for a long weekend in the late summer or early fall by ourselves. I've been reading up on San Diego, but I would love to hear some personal comments from individuals who have been there as to whether or not they like it. Also, I'm curious as to whether you like San Diego better than San Francisco (another option). We always try to have a few places in mind then grab onto a good airfare when we can find it. Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks,
Leah
San Diego's very nice, but nothing compares with San Francisco!

What kind of activities do you enjoy? If you like the beach and water sports (swimming, skiing, surfing, windsurfing, sun-tanning, tide-pooling, etc.), San Diego is the place to be from June to October. (In addition to all our other attractions!)

I don't think you can go wrong either way, we did San Diego with the kids for a week and on a separate trip did 2 nites in San Francisco and 2 nights in Carmel (just the two of us).

Really depends on what you want to do, but if you have not driven Highway 1 from the SF area down to Big Sur, it's not to be missed, including 17 mile drive between Monterrey and Carmel. Muir Wood is also just 1/2 hour north of SD and a beautiful way to spend a morning.

San Diego is wonderful too with LaJolla and Torrey Pines nearby.

Depends on what you want. If you want beaches and lolling, take San Diego. If your idea of a parents getaway is city excitement, San Francisco. Either would also be a fine gateway for, say, a wine country trip (San Francisco)--early October would be primo for that. I've been to San Diego several times, and it is very pretty, but to me it seems more like an extended suburb than a city.

Thanks Emily & Joyce. I appreciate all the scoop!! Emily, you asked what we enjoyed - - we love the Beach!! As a a matter of fact, we spent a week this summer with the kids in Fort Lauderdale. We have been to the beaches in Florida, Mexico and Texas (my home state!!), but have never been to California (or the beaches of course) before. I appreciate all the help. Now, all I need is an air-fare war!!
Leah
I was just in San Diego for the holiday weekend (I live in the bay area). San Diego is a clean and pretty town. the beaches in Orange County are nicer than the ones in San Diego, I think.
The nicest beaches I've been to in California are near Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco, although the water is too cold to swim, but much less crowded and with beautiful cliffs.
For airfare, check out Southwest Airlines - they have weekly internet specials which are super bargains.
