palm springs in feb 2000
 

i am trying to plan a trip during presidents week from cold new york to somewhere warm (airfare to the carribean that week is $1600. <BR>for 2 , no thank you...) and am thinking of palm springs or phoenix....whats the weather like? can i vegitate by the pool while my son swims? or too cold? help please!

Lori, <BR>You may find Palm Springs a bit cool then. Phoenix is a much better choice if you want hot weather. Both are great locations with lots to do and some excellent restaurants. Enjoy!! <BR>Roy

We were in Palm Springs last February and while it certainly was warmer than New England, it wasn't as warm/hot as we thought it would be. We sat at the pool only at high noon and never did go in. I'd head for Phoenix. <BR>

Lori, since you are not locked into a certain location, and are looking for a weeklong trip, you are a perfect candidate for an inexpensive charter to a warm destination. You should be able to pick up a trip for around $600 including airfare and hotel to someplace in Mexico, the Caribbean, etc., as long as you're open as to destination. We have done this several times with our family, including some of the "hot fares", or last minute deals. There are numerous websites that will email you with offers. As to Palm Springs, we were there and I personally thought it was the most boring place on earth, except for the desert-scape golf course, and even that was $125 per round per person!

A great site for weather info is <BR>www.washingtonpost.com/ <BR>wp-srv/weather/historical/historical.htm <BR>You just type in the city and it gives you historical average highs, lows and rainfall (more info for larger cities). <BR>Interestingly, the average high in Palm Springs in Feb. is 75.6 degrees, while the average high in Phoenix is 70.7, so it will be warmer in Palm Springs. As for it being a boring town, it depends on what you're interested in. There are some great hiking trails in the Indian canyons, I hear the aerial tramway is a great sight, and there are Indian casinos if you want to gamble a little (although it is not even close to being as good as a Las Vegas casino). And of course, golf.

Lori, <BR> <BR>I'd have to agree with John. Palm Springs should be warmer at that time of year. I've been to both places at that time of year and Palm Springs was definitely warmer. Both are fun cities but it also depends on your son's age and what you both like to do. The aerial tramway in Palm Springs was really neat. There's also a desert zoo in nearby Palm Desert which is very enjoyable. There are jeep rides, horseback riding and some good hiking. In Phoenix you can go to a Phoenix Suns basketball game, check out the Desert Botanical Gardens, horseback ride through the desert... I do think it will be a bit cool for the pool. Now just to confuse you even more...If your heart is set on a warm poolside vacation I agree you should checkout the charter flights. I don't know where in NY you live but I live in upstate NY and I'm traveling to the Dominican Republic in Feb. I'm taking a charter out of Toronto and I'm paying $976pp. and this includes air, and an all-inclusive stay at a 5 star resort. I booked through an ordinary travel agent. Good luck! <BR>

I find the other posts kind of humorous ...I have lived in PS for many years and travel to Phoenix frequently for business and the climates are virtually identical as far as winter temps. Phoenix is actually at a higher elevation so tends to be colder. <BR> <BR>The average daytime high here in the winter is usually very pleasant, in the high 60's to high 70's. If the hotel is on the ball the pool is heated and you should be able to swim. Nights can be cool or even chilly. <BR> <BR>good luck!
