Palm Springs, CA - Modernism
My wife and I have always wanted to go to Palm Springs and tour the midcentury homes. Just getting started with research and had some questions:
1. Is Modernism Week the best time to go or is it a madhouse at that time? Many tours are sold out for 2023. 2. Is there such a thing as a package tour where you can see multiple homes? Or are the bus tours the best option? 3. What are the "can't miss" homes to see? 4. How much time should I plan out there? 5. Nice/reasonably priced lodging? We likely will only visit Pam Springs, I've been to Joshua Tree, 29 Palms, etc. Thanks! |
We were there February 2020, during Modernism Week, and it was not overly crowded. The exhibit area on the main drag was underwhelming, more fun to drive around the neighborhoods on our own, and walk in certain blocks -- didnt want to tour in depth inside. You should take the gondola ride up the mtn for sure, takes only couple hours total time, to be done on clear day, and do try and tour Sunnylands, a gorgeous estate and "western white house" some years back. The short movie & lecture was fascinating, and the gardens are lovely. As they were holding a conference in the main house, we were not able to tour there but next time, we'll schedule to be able to do so. We are always visiting southern CA in winter and day trip here and there. There are lots of shops on the main drag selling lots of interesting modernism pieces of all sorts.

You could join that with a stay at one of the hotels like the Orbit In. Friends always liked Desert Hills https://www.desert-hills.com/ |
Small correction, Sunnylands wasn't the Western White House, but the Annenberg's estate, people more influential than any president & friends of the Fords, among others. Well worth visiting to see how the few at the very top of the heap lived.

Yucca? There is no such place. If you are going to create posts (for what reason?) do try to include the full name "Yucca Valley".
I am very curious as to where that "luxurious" accomodation could be found. Do you prefer the Super 8 or the America's Best Value Inn? |
