palm springs

Any sugestions on what to do with teens in Palm Springs?

Keep them in check! Just heard that Palm Springs has the highest new syphillis case rates in the entire country!

Alrighty then....after you/they avoid syphllis:

Definately take a ride on the tram. Well worth doing at any time of the year.

Take a hike in the desert. 1000 Palms oasis is pretty cool.

Take a ride South on 74 out of Indio into the San Bernadino Natl. Forest. Great overlooks and additional hiking.

Go to the East side of the Valley to see the Windmill fields. I understand there are tours but I have not done that yet.

This may sound lame but....go to Indio and there is an old family date place. Try their date shake and wander around the date plantation for free.

There are hot air baloon rides, fancy shopping in Palm Desert, lots of golf and tennis.

Have fun!

The Tram of Death.

The Trolly of Terror.

Seriously, it is a cool ride but scary!

I come back 8 hours later to post something serious, and placeu2 has already stolen my thunder!

Indio bills itself as "The date capital of the world" -- so you could take them there only telling them the above! I reluctantly tried a date shake, and found it delicious and certainly unique. Finding out how dates are pollinated & harvested is interesting too.

It's been 13 years since I bicycled thru that area, but I assume that the truckstop with the dinosaur (as seen in "Peewee's Big Adventure") would be something else to see if you went to the windmill farms. I don't know if there's any exhibits to see at the farms, but just the sight of those things churning out pollution-free energy is impressive. I'm also trying to remember the town -- maybe "Desert Center"? -- that boasts as having America's longest Main Street? Being from the east, I found the area very interesting, but because I was with a LA-Boston bicycling group, I couldn't spend as much time exploring as I'd have liked.

When are you going? If they're open, and the weather's right, Knott's Soak City is a lot of fun.

donnapg Oct 11th, 2004 09:52 AM

I believe Knotts closes in Ovtober (I am going in December so I checked it out the other day).

ARe any hiking areas better than others?

Has anyone been on a windmill farm tour?

I also saw some desert Jeep trips - how are they?

We are going in Dec.
Do they have the hot air balloon rides at that time? And which is the best company to do that with??
Thanks!

Try the Living Desert and the Flying Museum. Palm Desert and Palm Springs are the locations.
