Palm Springs - suggestions where to stay for two months please.

Hello everyone

My husband and I have decided we have spent 50+ years too long freezing through Canadian winters. We would like to stay in Palm Springs California from January 1st to February 29th from now on starting next year. I am hoping someone can direct us regarding what part of Palm Springs to stay in. Does anyone know where we can rent furnished accomodations for two months that are clean, reasonable, has a pool and can sleep up to four people at a time? Our 2 mid-twenty sons might join us for a couple of weeks. I haven't a clue where or how to start looking for a place. Would we be better off trying to find a place in San Diego?

You might want to call one of the agencies that specialize in vacation rentals, such as McClean (www.ps4rent.com) and get an idea of monthly rates and neighborhoods.

You can also browse thru vrbo.com, but unless you are familiar with all of the different complexes in the Coachella Valley, it can be daunting.

You don't need to limit yourselves to Palm Springs, consider Palm Desert, Indio (eg Indian Palms is pretty affordable), La Quinta.

We stayed at the Chase hotel, it looked designed for the snowbirds. They even have weekly and monthly rates posted on their website.

Each room/suite have a kitchenette. Our kitchen had a small fridge, a stove with 2 burners, a microvawe, table/chairs and cupboards.

The large bathroom had a large counter. Each room had a balcony/patio. Breakfast included. The pool area is nicely landscaped. The place is very quiet but close enough to walk to restaurants and shopping.

Lots of times people say Palm Springs, but that can be any of the desert cities. Try VRBO.com

We often stay in 2-3 bedroom condos in Desert Falls complex in Palm Desert. It's quiet, they have pools near each complex, grocery store/center a couple blocks away (restaurants, hair cut, nails), easy to drive to the other cities. Our adult children visit us too. Discounts for staying a month.

If you don't golf and/or play tennis, I think you might.

The area to avoid in Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, etc. is the northern parts of town. This area is very windy and sand will blow in your pool.

Also, if you are looking to rent a place with a pool, San Diego will be too cold to use it in January and February.

Firstly, I agree - San Diego would be "iffy" weather wise. Palm Desert or any of the desert areas as mentioned above are fabulous. We have a townhouse on a golf course-many pools, hot-tubs, etc. that we rent during the winter months-I can't advertise here so I won't but there are many people who do this, too. Any of the real estate agencies can help you. One of them is First Team Becker and Becker - they have lots of properties to chose from in several price ranges. You'll love the area. 8-)

Thank you all for your input. It is truly is a daunting task to find a good spot to stay for an extended period when you have never been to the city to begin with.

We've heard back from someone who has a condo they are willing to rent in the Racquet Club Road area and it even has its own private pool and courtyard! Is that a good area of town to be in?

I would stay away from the north end of Palms Springs unless that is all you can afford. It is a bit scary to pick someplace for two months if you've never been to Palm Springs. Is there any way you could go for a quick visit and look at a few different complexes?

You might want to pick a few different locations and post again with more specific title, eg. "Would you recommend Desert Princess, Raquet Club or Indian Palms?"

In your shoes, I would book a hotel and spend a few days looking around for a place to stay for the longer term. (Why buy a pig in a poke.)

I like Palm Springs, but two months there would drive me bonkers.

Does that mean they will go bonkers whether they stay home or travel?

I'd rather be warm and bonkers than cold and bonkers any day!

In any event, I agree with beachbum who wrote: Would we be better off trying to find a place in San Diego? If you don't golf and/or play tennis, I think you might.

I'd be WAAAY more bored in San Diego.

Unless one's taste runs to chain restaurants and malls.

Of course the zoo is nice, but so is the Living Desert, which is a lot more manageable.

San Diego is great, love it to death, but I always think it is funny when people think all there is to do in the desert (aka the PS area) is golf and play tennis.

A few people replied to avoid the North end. How do we know which properties are in the North end? Thanks

The "north end" would be close to Hwy 10 or on the north side of Hwy 10. I think it would make sense to you if you saw an area map.
