Pale Male, the Central Park Hawk
There was a wonderful documentary on PBS about a red-tail hawk living in NYC; today I heard that the building management of the Fifth Avenue co-op where Pale Male and his mates have built nests and raised babies (for the last 11 years) was removed. Paula Zahn's husband is apparently on the co-op Board and was instrumental in the removal of the nest. Mary Tyler Moore, who also lives in the building, is incenses about the nest removal. I felt like crying when I heard about Pale Male holding a twig and looking for his nest.

Kind-of a weird time of year for a bird to be setting up a nest, isn't it? There was a discussion about this earlier today, I'll top it.

I find it interesting that so many people here in NYC are getting involved with the Pale Male eviction. There will be a rally and candlelight vigil here tomorrow evening, so all of the "liberals" can show their outrage.
There are tens of thousands of homeless HUMAN BEINGS in NYC, who are aguably less capable of taking care of themselves than these hawks are. But, of course they have no majesty or regalness about them, do they? |
As there are more than a few homeless people here in the UK, but there was quite a bit of fuss about Fox Hunting, no?

No troll - see if you can get on-line article from Sat 12/11 NYTimes. Hawk (I assume not the male) has nested on upper level grate of exclusive condo for years - has hatched multiple offspring. Owners do not like the bird droppings and dead pigion and rat carcasses dropped on sidewalk outside door.

Actually, according to the NY Times, not all the building's residents were in favor of the nest destruction. But the head of the co-op board was, and railroaded it through.
