Painted Churches
First of all, I have no personal knowledge about these painted churches; however, my Mom was talking about a group of friends that were going to take a tour, so it piqued my curiosity. I thought others would be interested. These churches are located in Schulenburg, Texas - between Houston and San Antonio, along Hwy. 10.

Hi jill_h. I've heard they are beautiful to see.
BTW, here is a previous thread posted by rkkwan on it if anyone is interested. http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...lenberg-tx.cfm |
Oh, I would love to see them. I think there may also be some in New Mexico, with painted kachina frescoes in Catholic churches.

I think the Catholic church in Plantersville, TX (south of College Station) may be a painted church too.

When my mother lived in the Hill Country (Boerne, in Kendall County, just north of San Antonio), she often mentioned these "famous" church that I'd never heard of.
One weekend we drove over and viewed them all. This makes a pleasant, low-key, old fashioned outing on a beautiful spring day in Texas with all the wild flowers blowing in the wind. I live in busy Houston but was raised in a small town so I find it very peaceful to return to my quieter roots. All the photos noted above are glorious. I encourage you to smple the great country cooking in the small eateries around Shulenberg and ten miles away in Flatonia. Both places make a nice half-way-ish stopping point in a drive along I10 between Houston and San Antonio. |
JCB - I had done a search of the forum before I posted this to see if anyone else had posted but nothing came up. Anyway, I think I've got to plan a weekend to visit. The churches are just beautiful.

Hi jill_h,
for some reason, rkkwan's thread doesn't come up with any sort of searches (I tried all sorts of permutations with no luck). Good thing jcb found it somehow. |
I'm glad you brought it up again!! I just happened to remember the previous thread and that rkkwan posted it. It took me a while to find it too. (I'm procrastinating cleaning the kitchen, so I was on a quest to find it!)
I think it w/b a fun trip - hope you get to go soon! |
