I believe my problem is solved. We have worked out an arrangement with the Vendue and will be having dinner on the rooftop there. I am delighted with the plan. Thank you for your help, Everyone.

I am so glad, cmcfong. I took my nephew to Charleston a few years ago and he really enjoyed the Vendue - and the great views. What a fabulous location. I'm sure it will go very well.
(by the way, the labs weren't able to go play in the snow. I ran up to the mountains after I set up for a conference - and they were at home. Shhh...don't tell them!? They ARE having a blast wading in mud puddles - even more then swimming in the ponds )

Sorry cmc but I've been in Philly all weekend and just saw your post.
Because of insurance issues, few venues will allow you to bring in your own caterer. This is also why they will not allow you to take to go boxes from weddings etc.
If the Vendue falls through, the rooftop is a fabulous location so I hope not, have you checked with the local Catholic Churches? Most all have halls they will allow you to rent.
Also, did you contact the city? The parks are always being used for events and I often see tents set up.

I figured you were away, GoT. Hope you had a good trip. I think we are pretty well set with the Vendue (thank goodness). It will save all kinds of hassles with alcoholic beverages...which are an absolute must with this crowd...and easy access. Plus it is about as cool a place as one can imagine for a big OH birthday party. You have helped me plan this and I am grateful for all your suggestions.

Great gift suggestions GoT! Another idea that might be more affordable for so many people would be Benne Seed Wafers. If you're not familiar with them, here's a little blurb: "Crisp, buttery little cookies sprinkled with benne seeds. Benne come from the African name for sesame seeds that were brought to the Lowcountry in the 17th century. Benne wafers have been a sweet southern favorite for hundreds of years."

I love you girls! Your ideas are super.
We all grew up in Panama and normally our favors are something related to that beautiful country ; but, this year would be the perfect one to do stone grits and pralines and benne wafers. The sweetgrass baskets would have to be for moi. Too selfish and cheap to share. Thanks for the suggestions.
