Hi,
I posted a request for information, and it seems to have diappeared, so I will try again.
I am planning to spend a week house boating on Lake Powell in Aug.
I will be flying out of Boston.
I am trying to confirm that Las Vegas is the best airport to fly into. Both in ease and cost.
Any other suggestions?
Also, what is the distance between airport and Lake Powell?
Any suggestions on a place to spend a day or two in the area? Or is Las Vegas the logical choice? I will have 2 teenage girls with me, so I would not be in the casinos, etc. But I thought that they might get a kick of the lights, hotels, shows and all.
Thanks for your advice!

Hello cpeicott! If you click on your name (underlined in blue) all of your posts will appear. They are still there even if you don't see them on the left side of the screen.

Sorry I don't know anything about the area you are visiting, but I wanted you to know how to find your posts. I'm sure someone here can provide some information, have a great trip!

Hi,
Thanks!
I had tried putting my screen name into the search box, but that one question did not come up.
Your way did work! Do other people see it if I don't?
Now any answers to my question?

Hi! We have been planning a similiar trip and started out in Las Vegas but have since decided to fly into Phoenix and drive up to Sedona for the night. We weren't too excited about the LV scene either; your girls might find S. interesting. This will also put you more in line with Page geographically without having to drive several hours back east from LV.
Good Luck!

I've driven all over Arizona and Las Vegas and would definitely recommend you fly into Phoenix, not Las Vegas. It will take you two hours from Phoenix to Flagstaff and then another two hours or a little more to Page, depending on whether or not you get behind a motorhome or boat. But the traffic generally moves very quickly.

Driving from Las Vegas, in my opinion, would take about six hours.

Distance in mileage is about the same (270 miles) from Phoenix or LV to Page. Travel time is about the same - 5 to 5 1/2 hours. You can base your decision on who offers the best airfare. You might also factor in the cost of a rental car.

utahtea May 9th, 2005 10:26 PM

I came up with 283 miles from the Phoenix Airport (5 hours travel time) and 289 miles from the Las Vegas Airport (5 1/2 hours travel time)

I agree with Rob, go with the best airfare and car rental.

If you have any time for siteseeing before or after Page, then from Las Vegas you have Zion & Bryce National Parks and from Phoenix you have Sedona and the Grand Canyon.

i just returned from a trip to Lake Powell, Sedona, GC, Zion and Vegas. We flew from New York to Phoenix, we wanted to do Sedona. When returning home we left out of Vegas. I got Southwest @ $80.00 each way. I thought that was a good deal.

Hi,
I will keep trying, but on first try, it seems that Las Vegas can be done RT for 250.00 non stop and that Phoenix is much higher.(Boston/LV) I could fly out of Manchester NH also, which has some SouthWest flights.
If we go to LV are some of the other places mentioned on the way to Page?
I can add a a day or two on either end of the trip. I might have to, given the time of the flights and the time difference!
I hate red eyes! But looks like we will be flying that way.

From Las Vegas to Page, AZ it's 289 miles as I mentioned. Zion National Park is on the way to Page and would make an excellent place to spend a night or even better two nights. It's 172 miles to Zion (2 1/2 - 3 hours travel time) and then another 117 miles to Page.

Bryce Canyon National Park is only 90 more miles out of the way.

Hi,
Thank for the input.
Where would you stay at Zion Nat. Park?

utahtea May 10th, 2005 10:05 PM

I would stay at Watchman campground in Zion :-d

Others will chime in and give you lodging advise or you can do a search of the forums on Zion.

I vote for the Las Vegas RT from Boston (we did it last August). My kids loved seeing the sites in Vegas (we stayed at the Flamingo) but Zion is definitely better. Stay in Springdale at Flanigans or Desert Pearl. There are other cheaper choices as well. Check out reviews here and on tripadvisor.com.

ccrosner,
Would you mind telling me a little about your trip?
Did you arrive late at night? How long did you spend in Vegas?
Did you spend a full week on a house boat? Or did you do something different?

I am just trying to see how long I will need to fly out there, spend a week on the boat and get back to an airport and fly home.
I also don't want to miss something we should see if we are traveling that far.
Or be exhausted the whole time, by trying to do it all in too short a period of time.
Any advise?

I think you can do a search on my name and find my trip reports from last year...but here's some thoughts in a nutshell.

We did not rent a houseboat. I considered doing a several day trip but changed my mind after seeing how much it would cost. Others who have done it would be better equipped to answer your question on houseboating.

We flew from Boston to Las Vegas in the late afternoon. Arrived around 10 p.m. Picked up a rental car and went straight to our room at the Flamingo. Exhausted. On east coast time. Woke up too early and got started. Spent much of the day 'touring' the various hotels. Lots of walking. Then went to the Flamingo pool for a few hours in the afternoon. Changed and went to Paris for dinner and trip up the Tower. To bed around 8:30. Up and out by 8:30 the next morning.

Then we did GC South Rim (2 nights), Page, Bryce (2 nights), Zion (3 nights) and home.

FABULOUS trip. Highlight was definitely Bryce. Loved it all.

If you do not rent a houseboat on Powell, I think you are missing 99% of the thrill of being there. I know it is expensive, but the views at all times of day from sunrise to sunset are unbelievable. As the shadows change, then entire lake changes. You just can't get the same feel on a tour or on the shore.

cpeicott May 17th, 2005 03:01 PM

Hi,
We will be staying on a house boat and understand it will be very beautiful!
That part is all set. We can't wait!
It is the getting there, getting back, figuring how many nights are needed to stay in a hotel, where to stay, etc. that I am trying to figure out.
It looks like we will have a five hour
drive once we land in Vegas, after a long plane ride, renting a car, etc. so it is not easily done all in one day.
Any thoughts on hotels in Vegas (with 2 teenage girls) or in Page?
Thanks for everyone's help!
