Pacific Grove butterflies & whales
We'll be in Pacific Grove the end of this month staying at the Seven Gables Inn for 2 nights.
Does anyone know if there's a chance of seeing any whales? I'm not sure when they migrate. Also, The monarch's are supposed to be there in the fall....any chance you might know of a good spot to see them?? Thanks for any help you can provide. |
Monarch's start arriving in October, and are usually all there be Thanksgiving. The Inn will be able to direct you to the best places to see them. BTW be sure to go see them on a sunny day when they can be sen to best advantage. Never forget taking my sister to see them in the eucalyptus trees and having think I was crazy for taking her to see trees with dead brown leaves--that is until the sun came out and they became to take flight.
California grey whales start migrating from Baja in October, so you might see some of the early few. |
The butterflies are most abundant in Novemeber but they can be seen beginning in Mid Oct. Try going to the Monarch Sanctuary between 11:00-3:00. for best viewing. The Monarch Grove Sanctuary is located just off of Lighthouse Avenue on Ridge Road. There are no entrance fees.
Humpback and Blue Whales are around the Monterey Bay this time of year. You can take a whale watching trip our of Monterey Bay. There was a recent article In the Monterey Herald about a whale watching trip. Here's a link: http://www.montereyherald.com/mld/mo...ld/6689483.htm |
Thanks so much for the information.!

Monarchs should be arriving in PG soon, as they are now in and around Santa Cruz, located North of PG/Monterey. Recent article in the newspaper announced a public gathering this wknd.
We saw whales while fishing - if that interests you. A person can combine trips. "If you don't get one, you should be able to get the other." |
We saw whales just offshore at Point Lobos, no boat trip necessary--they were clearly visible to the naked eye. It's so beautiful, there, too...
