PAC coast highway Oregon
 

My wife and I are looking for info on a road trip in Oregon on the 101 going south from Portland we want to take our time a stay over in small towns and site. See and hike

What month? US 101 through Oregon has several names but none of them is Pacific Coast Highway.
If you do fly to PDX, take US 26 west out of town and not US 30 which is dangerous even in good weather.
The first coastal stop can be Seaside or Cannon Beach.
Try to get some of our great cheese (or ice cream) in Tillamook.

There are several coastal Oregon State Parks that have yurts that are open for rentals all year long.
I have rented a yurt in William Tugman SP and at Sunset Bay out of Coos Bay.
Another yurt I have stayed in not too far from Portland is at Champoeg (Sham -POO -ee) where the state was chartered on February 14 1859.

I like staying in little town of Yachats. The Fireside and Adobe are oceanfront hotels I have stayed at- the Adobe has a dining room with ocean views which is nice.

If you drive to the visitors center at Cape Perpetua, you can get trail maps of the area.
My favorite spot on the coast is Devils Elbow State Park. There is a beautiful beach on a cove with a trail up to the lighthouse- its an easy walk. But from there, there is another trail that starts behind the lighthouse and takes you to the Hobbit beach which is only accessible by walking in.
The lighthouse keepers house is a B&B. Nice place to stay, an amazing breakfast in AM and fun to walk up to the lighthouse at night. if interested, need to make reservations months in advance.

For the record...
Highway 30 is not a dangerous route. We just took it in September. Just about every route to the Oregon Coast will have some curves, including both 26 and 30.

Highway 26 goes through the Coast Range, which are mountains. One year when we for some crazy reason decided to do a winter weekend at the beach, we intentionally took Highway 30 because 26 had too much snow to get through.

It would be good to know how many days you will be in the area. Are you flying into PDX, and if so are you including your flight days as one of those days of sightseeing?

Many people on this board prefer the Southern Oregon coast, but I grew up with the central and northern coasts and find them just as pretty. Also, I feel that Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach is iconic and should be part of any Oregon Coast trip.

If you have say, 5 days of actual sightseeing, I would do north/central coast so that the bulk of your time is sightseeing, with minimal time getting back to Portland. Also let us know roughly what time your flight gets in. Finally, how far do you like to hike?

Portland to the coast north to south then crater lake then to Mt hood then on to Mt Ranier then back to Portland
Overnight in Portland on way in and way out
We like 4-8 mike hikes with elevation when we can.
