Overwhelmed by Kentucky state park options!

I'm planning a trip to Kentucky this summer with a bunch of friends. We're interested in renting a house/cabin near one of the state parks, preferably one with a lake. However, there are so many options I'm not sure which to pick! We'd like something that's not too touristy, has plenty of good hiking trails, and near a lake. We'd also like to do a day trip to Mammoth Cave but would be willing to drive two hours one way to get there from our home base. Any thoughts?

No matter which park you choose, you'll love it. Barren River State Resort Park is close to Mammoth Cave and so is Rough River. You'll have more time to hike and see the park you choose with a shorter drive. Within the two hour range, you can't beat the view from the lodge at Lake Barkley. Western Kentucky is gorgeous and a destination all its own. You can reserve on-line or by calling. Go here: http://www.parks.ky.gov/findparks/resortparks/br/ Summers are busy, especially on the big lakes so reserve early! Mammoth Cave also has trails.

You may also want to think about Lake Cumberland State Resort Park. It is about 2 hours from Mammoth Cave. Don't confuse it with Cumberland Falls St Pk.
